Description	:	Vera C. Rice, 86, passed away Monday, June 13, 2005 at Coulee Community Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Vera was born October 18, 1918, in Seattle to Richard and Clara (Clepper) Whyatt. Her childhood was spent up Salmon Creek out of Conconully and in the Synarep area on Tunk Creek near Riverside where her father owned and operated sawmills. Vera began her schooling in Synarep and Riverside. The family moved the sawmill to Nespelem in 1936. Rice, 86, passed away Monday, June 13, 2005 at Coulee Community Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Vera was born October 18, 1918, in Seattle to Richard and Clara (Clepper) Whyatt. Her childhood was spent up Salmon Creek out of Conconully and in the Synarep area on Tunk Creek near Riverside where her father owned and operated sawmills. Vera began her schooling in Synarep and Riverside. The family moved the sawmill to Nespelem in 1936. Vera graduated from Nespelem High School as salutatorian in 1938 (her sister Irene was valedictorian). On August 22, 1942, she married Fred Rice in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. After several years on the Carstensen farm near Almira, and two years in Grand Coulee, where Fred worked on Grand Coulee Dam, the couple moved to the Rex-Delrio area and began farming the Rice family homestead. Fred passed away in 1970 and Vera remained on the family farm until her death. Vera worked for several years as a billing clerk for the Nespelem Valley R.E.A. and in later years wrote a column for the Star Newspaper and worked occasionally in the office as a proofreader and receptionist. She traveled extensively in Europe, Canada and the United States. She was a member of the Grand Coulee United Methodist Church and served as treasurer for the United Methodist Women for many years. In 2001, she was named the Woman of the Year for this organization. In 1976, as a member of the Bicentennial History Book Committee, she helped with the publishing efforts of the local history book, "Pioneers to Power." This committee later assembled and buried a 100-year time capsule in North Dam Park. Vera is survived by one son, Ray A. (and Terry) Rice of Othello and one daughter, Darlene (and Ted) Dittmer of Grand Coulee, two brothers, Dale Whyatt of Denver, Colo., and Floyd Whyatt of Spokane, and three grandchildren, Debbie (and Dave) Williams of Olympia, Scott (and Rosa) Rice of Everett and John (and Jinger) Dittmer of Spokane; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred, two sisters, Irene Goodwin and Myrtle Jensen and her parents. Memorial services will be Saturday, June 18, at 11:00 a.m. in the Grand Coulee United Methodist Church, 405 Center Street. Memorial gifts may be given to the Grand Coulee United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
