Her birth on June 29, 1882, completed this new American family, making Charles' and Amelia's contribution to a growing America, an even dozen. Amelia was 42, Charles 46, and very possibly already in declining health. Clara was only 7 when he died in 1890. But, she grew up in a home surrounded by big brothers. Those same big brothers most likely introduced their little sister to a fellow volunteer firefighter, William Jack Hockridge, better known as Jack. Clara was only 16 when she and Jack were married on March 4, 1899, in her mother's home. Sadly, three days later, Amelia suddenly died. Her obituary included a portion of a conversation she had with her son, Charles, the night of the wedding: "I would not consent to Clara's marriage were it not that I am afraid I will not live much longer, and I would rather see her settled before I die." Amelia was 59. Jack and Clara made their home on Bromley Street, next to his brother, T. George Hockridge and his wife, also named Clara. Jack and (our) Clara had two children; Albert, called Ab, and Helen. They were also instrumental in raising their grandson, Robert, Ab's son. Clara was involved in a number of social groups including the volunteer firemen's auxiliary, the Jolly Club, the Evangelical Aid Society, and making Christmas stockings for the American Legion. But above all, she was devoted to her family, lending a helping hand to all in need. Her kindness was especially noteworthy when she helped care for her brother Fred and his young family after the tragic death of his wife, and again, years later, near the end of his life after a debilitating stroke. Clara died of a heart attack on May 1, 1954. She was laid to rest near her mother and father in Riverside Cemetery. Clara was 72. Her husband Jack, , was later honored with a burial plot just across the road in the Old Volunteer Firefighter's Memorial. She has eleven siblings; Charles Adolph Buchwald Jr. Matilda Buchwald Julia Buchwald Robert J. Buchwald Theodore Leonard Buchwald Amelia W. Buchwald Fred Lewis Buchwald Harry Buchwald Alice Buchwald William Buchwald Frank Buchwald. She married 04MAR1899 William John Hockridge at Marshalltown, Marshall, Iowa. They have two known children; Albert George Hockridge Helen Ann Hockridge.
