Read More	Fred Louis Buchwald The 7th child of Charles and Amelia Buchwald Fred was born on May 26, 1872, in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the first child born in the new home at 108 N 1st Avenue after his family had returned to Marshalltown from Galena. The 1880 census recorded him as 'Freddie' - 8 years old. Freddie was 22 when he married Mary Ernstberger, the youngest child of John and Regina Ernstberger, both natives of Germany. As a young man, Fred was a volunteer firefighter and a coupler on the competitive running team. Fred and Mary 's home was on the corner of North 5th Avenue and Bromley Street. (The address was originally 112 North 5th Avenue and later changed to 411 Bromley). Five children were born in this home: Lena, Amelia, John, Howard and Kenneth, known as Mike. Sadly, their mother died at only 31, leaving Fred with five young children aged 3 to 12. A hired housekeeper and Fred's nearby sisters and sisters-in-law helped care for the family until his older daughter, Lena, assumed the duties of raising her younger siblings. When Lena married at 17, her sister Amelia left school and continued caring for her family until her own marriage. Tragedy continued to visit Fred and his family. His son, Howard, who had lived with his father's sister, Aunt Til (Matilda Buchwald Leins) for several years after his mother's death, suffered a wrestling injury that required lengthily hospitalizations in Marshalltown. Colfax and Iowa City. Additionally, as a young man, Howard was stricken with a crippling illness that ultimately resulted in his death in 1929, at the age of 26. Fred's daughter, Lena, lost her first born son, baby Braden. By the late 1920's, Fred's health had begun to deteriorate and after a debilitating stoke, he was living with Lena and her family when she suddenly died. Lena was only 30. After Lena's death, Fred's sisters cared for him until professional help was necessary. He was commuted to the State Hospital in Independence, where he was 'a model' patient until his death December 16, 1928. He was buried next to his wife in Riverside Cemetery. Fred was 56. Buchwald Harry Buchwald Alice Buchwald William Buchwald Frank Buchwald Clarabelle Buchwald. He married 09OCT1894 Mary Ernstberger at Marshalltown, Marshall, Iowa. They have five known children; Lena Marie Buchwald Amelia May Buchwald John Robert Buchwald Howard George Buchwald Kenneth Donald Buchwald.
