His father, Charles, operated a saloon on Main Street, most likely hosting many of the recently established German residents of the city. Unfortunately, Charles' health had begun to deteriorate and by the time Harry was only 10, his father was (according to his obituary in 1890) "confined to his home, suffering from an old wound which developed into a cancer." When Harry was 16, his father died, so at a young age he went to work at the Brittain and Co. meat packing plant as a sausage maker. After the packing plant closed, he worked many years as a pipefitter for the M and St. L Railway. And in his "golden years", he was a custodian for Anson Elementary and Marshalltown Senior High School. In 1897 he married Etta Duncan, and as was the custom with many of the other newly married Buchwald children, the couple continued living in the family home on N 1st Avenue. Their first child, a son they named Harry, was born there, but died of pneumonia six months later. Shortly after his mother's death in 1899, Harry and Etta built a new home at 108 N 5th Avenue. They raised three children here - Margaret, Mabel, and my dad, Ralph - until buying the adjoining house, brother Fred's, at 411 Bromley Street. For a reason no longer known, Harry came to be called Jim by family and friends. Jim and most of his brothers, as well as a number of brothers-in-law, were volunteer firemen and excelled in the friendly (and sometimes not so friendly) state competitions, winning accolades, medals, and a championship belt for their performances. This fellowship of young men, formed in the late 1800's continued into the first half of the 20th century with reunions and re-enactments and culminated for Jim with the attendance of a contingent of old volunteer firefighters at his funeral in 1947. My cousin, Jack Berg, remembered our grandfather as being a kind and gentle man. The only time he could recall him losing his temper was when the family cat, Nicodemus, ran up the freshly varnished stairway to the upstairs bedroom. Another grandson, Bill Matson, remembered Grandma and Grandpa's enjoyment of music. He was especially fond of a good jig, and she played a mouth harp. Their home on the corner of Bromley Street and N 5th Avenue was the hub of the Buchwald neighborhood. At one time nearly a dozen Buchwald or Buchwald related families lived within three blocks of their 411 Bromley home. Occasionally, Grandma and Grandpa would move all the furniture from the large living and dining rooms into a small third room, roll up the carpets, throw a little sawdust on the floor, crank up the old Victrola, and invite family and friends in for an evening of food, dancing, and festivities. I should mention, Grandpa, good German that he was, brewed his own beer in the basement, right next to the crock of sauerkraut. The kinder enjoyed the antics of the older folks from under the relocated dining room table, while sipping their own root beers. Eine gute Zeit - a good time - was had by all. During the early 1900's until his death, Grandpa was an amateur photographer, capturing an historical record of family and events in black and white images. These century-old photos now provide a fascinating glimpse into our Buchwald past. On the evening of June 22nd, 1947, a storm toppled a large tree in front of his home. Harry was concerned a passerby might be injured by the downed electrical wires and was clearing the branches, when he was stricken with a fatal heart attack. He was laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery, next to his baby son. Harry was 73. When his story is told by future generations, may it reflect that Harry Buchwald was a humble, hardworking first generation American with a proud German heritage, who cherished his family and friends and left a legacy of love.
