Masonic Services were held at the Nodaway Cemetery by the Iroquois Lodge No. 590 of Nodaway assisted by Richard Runyan of Villisca. The pallbearers were Fred Carothers, E.C. Kennedy, Ray McCoy, Harry Cooney, Lawrence Beck and Harold Everetts, all Brother Masons, and interment was at the Nodaway Cemetery. Clarence Edward Bontrager, son of Hezekiah and Elizabeth Ann (May) Bontrager, was born near DeWitt, Iowa, August 2, 1878 and was 80 years old at his death. February 10, 1899, he was united in marriage with Anna Laurie Friman at Atchison, Kans. This home was blessed with three children; Mrs. Darwin Dunn of Villisca, Ronald D. Bontrager of Garden Grove, California, and Mrs. Martin Ashcraft of Denver, Colorado. Except for a few Years spent in Kansas, Mr. Bontrager spent his entire life in Adams and Montgomery Counties. He operated a grocery store and meat market in Nodaway for about 25 years, taking an active part in community affairs. He served on the Nodaway Town Coucile for 14 years and was one of those instrumental in getting electricity for the town. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Nodaway for nearly 50 years. In 1925, the family moved to Villisca where Mr. Bontrager owned and operated a grocery store and meat market until illness forced his retirement. Besides his children, he leaves three granddaughters: Mrs. Andrew Crussell of Fairbanks, Alaska; Judy Dale Bontrager of Garden Grove, California; and Candance Kay Dunn of Villisca, Iowa. Also one great grandson, Jeffrey Crussell of Fairbanks, Alaska; one brother, Frank Bontrager of Springfield, Oregon; and three nieces and 3 nephews. Mr. Bontrager was preceded in death by his wife, father and mother and three sisters and three brothers. Those coming from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr and Mrs. Martin Ashcraft of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. Andrew Knapp of Leavenworth, Kansas (a niece), Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Dunn of Aurora, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Kapple of Burlington, Iowa, Mr. Vern Wagaman and Mrs. Marvin Thurman of Creston, Iowa.
