The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, April 3, 1930 ====== Clarence Henry Marshall was born at Port Byron, Illinois, December 11, 1869, and passed away at Hastings, Nebraska, April 2d (sic), 1930, aged 60 years, 3 months, 22 days. His parents, John C. and Mary Marshall, were among the earliest pioneers of Nuckolls county (sic), having moved to their homestead four miles south of Edgar, Nebr., when Clarence was a small child. Prairie fires, grasshopper years, merciless blizzards that swept the treeless plains and the canstant (sic) fear of Indian attacks, were a part of the childhood experiences of those early days. A two room log cabin with a sod roof was the first home. Clarence was the oldest of a family of eight children and experienced a full share of the hardships of the early days. On Christmas day in 1898 he was united in marriage with Flornce (sic) Almeda Portwood at the farm home of the Portwood's, to which union were born six children, two having preceded their parents in death, Lovell aged 12 years and a son who died in infancy. Mrs. Marshall passed away some ten years ago, leaving Tyndal an infant son, and Hal a small boy, and two daughters without a mother's care. How well her duties have been fulfilled by her oldest daughter has been the marvel of all who knew the family. He was converted in 1894 at a meeting held in the Evangelical church at Angus where he and his wife became members and until they were transferred to the Methodist church, when they moved from Angus. He was a charter member of the M.W.A. Lodge of Angus, later transferring to Nelson, where he was a member at the time of his death. He was also a faithful member of the Old Fellows Lodge No. 77 of Nelson and had many loyal and faithful friends among the Woodmen and Oddfellows of Nelson. Mr. Marshall was engaged in the lumber business and contracting for many years at Wilsonville, Arapahoe, Holdrege, Nelson, McCook and other points. Two years ago he had a serious break in his health, since which time he has made his home with his daughter Mildred at Davenport, Nebr. He leaves to mourn his departure, two sons, Hal and Tyndal; two daughters, Mildred and Mrs. Clarice Towe (NOTE: should be ROW), and two grandsons all of Davenport, four brothers, Harvey V. of Martin, S.D., John C., McCook; Arminus of Lawrence; and Raymond, three sisters, Mrs. Ella Moore, Oak; Mrs. Emma Worley, Sheridan Lake, Colorado; and Mrs. Bessie Harpster of Edgar; and a host of other relatives and friends.
