Read More	Clarence Raymond Garner, 97, departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006 at his Hanford home after a long illness. Clarence was born in Hanford on Oct. 23, 1909 to the late Grant Garner, who served on the Kings County Board of Supervisors for 32 years, and Elsa Garner. He had three sisters, Grace, Hazel and Ruth and an older brother, Leslie, all of whom predeceased Clarence. He was a devout member of the First United Methodist Church of Hanford his entire life and was one of the first babies baptized in the church. Clarence attended grammar school in the Kings River School District, Hanford High School and the University of California at Davis where he majored in animal husbandry. After graduating from UC Davis, Clarence returned to Hanford, and bought his ranch on Highway 198 and 7th Avenue. Sheep were always his first love and he raised several prize winning champions that won at the Kings County Fair and California State Fair. He was a member of the California Wool Growers Association and elected Farm Bureau Association president in May of 1965. Clarence will be remembered for the many lambs he sold to young Future Farmers of America and 4-H students to raise for judging in local and state fairs. Clarence married Anna Charlotte Price on Aug. 12, 1938. Anna was a home economics advisor in Kings County for the University of California at Berkeley. In 1938, 13-year-old Marie Chevallier of Hanford was taken in and raised in their loving care until she was an adult. In 1946, they took in one of Clarence's nieces to raise as their own, when 15-year-old Lorraine Kelly (now Parsons) was left without parents. Their two sons, Leslie Raymond Garner, born on May 2, 1944 and John Grant Garner born on Aug. 14, 1946 survive them. Clarence and Anna were always interested in community affairs, politics and the preservation of historical buildings. As members of the Historical Society of Kings County, they worked diligently to preserve the main building of the old Hanford High School from being torn down, but sadly lost the battle. However, they also worked to preserve the Kings County Courthouse Square and successfully saved this historic building from demolition. Clarence became a member of the Mayflower Society when Anna discovered, through her genealogy work, that his descendants crossed the Atlantic on the Mayflower. Clarence is survived by two sons, Leslie (Les) and wife Debra of Bluffton, S.C., John and wife Sylvia of Hanford; four grandsons, Alan and wife Eileen of Sunland, Eric of Palm Desert, Jeffrey and wife Joni of Hanford, James and wife Mandy of Galt. He also is survived by two great-grandsons, Aidan and Reed of Sunland. Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, June 1994.
