The funeral was held from the home last Sunday and burial was in the Dayton Cemetery. Stratford Courier September 8, 1927 OBITUARY Clarence William Stephens Clarence William Stephens was born in Lehigh, Iowa, October 7, 1890, and passed this life in the government hospital at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri, August 25, 1927, at the age of 36 years, 10 months, 18 days. In his boyhood, he came with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stephens, to Dayton, and grew to young manhood among us. With his brother, Wallace, he engaged in farming south of town. In the World war, he enlisted in Co. E, 119th Infantry, February 27, 1918, and left with them for overseas service May 11th of that year. He was seriously wounded in the battle of Bellicourt, September 20th, and was in the hospital, but recovered to rejoin his unit, and returned with them after the armistice. He received his honorable discharge April 12, 1919. After his return home he again engaged in farming on a place southwest of Lehigh. On February 28, 1924, he was united in married to Anna Spurling, of Stratford. To their union were born two children, May Joy and Beverly Ann, who survive with the bereaved wife to mourn the loss of husband and father. He is also survived by a stepson and daughter, Leivan and Dale, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stephens, of this place, and two brothers, H.R. Stephens of Fort Dodge, and Wallace Stephens, of Dumont, Iowa. A brother and sister have preceded him in death. His funeral was held from the home near Lehigh last Sunday afternoon. Rev. Albertson, of the Lehigh M.E. church, officiating. His remains were brought to Dayton, and interment made in Dayton cemetery under the auspices of the American Legion. Clarence Stephens was highly respected by all who knew him. He lived an upright life, always industrious, and from boyhood his parents and his loved ones were his earnest care. A host of friends in this community mourn his passing so early in his manhood from life's activities. –Dayton Review
