Read More	Clark Derr Suicide Mon. at Bonaparte People of Bonaparte and many friends in other communities were shocked and saddened Monday morning by the news of the passing of Clark (Lundy) Derr, well-known Bonaparte merchant and enterprising citizen. Mr. Derr and his daughter, Mary Florence, had gone about their usual Monday morning duties, including the family washing. When it came time for Miss Derr to go to the glove factory to report for duty at eight o'clock she went to the garage expecting him to drive her down town in the car, and she found him sitting in the rear seat of the car, dead from a shotgun wound in the heart. The gun which was used is known as the .410 gauge. He was sitting in the end or corner of the seat and had not fallen forward. Death must have been instantaneous. During the past week Mr. Derr had completed the purchase of the Overman Grocery at Keosauqua and had leased the building for one year, with the privilege of fifteen. The show room of the store had been re-decorated and there was a sign on the front door giving the date of the business opening. The grocery business was to have been of the Jack Sprat variety. Many people knew Lundy Derr because he was for years in the grocery and meat market business, also during recent years had operated the Bonaparte Mill; others knew him because he was pitcher for the Bonaparte Indians baseball team and played with the teams of most of the towns in southeastern Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Miller Derr. Surviving are one son, Miller, a student in the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery, and one daughter, Mary Florence. Also by his mother, Mrs. Anna Derr of Bonaparte; three brothers - Oscar Derr of Peoria, Ill., Guy and Harry Derr of Chicago; and one sister, Mrs. Clara Smutz of Stockport. Coroner Harold W. Catcott of Birmingham was called, but he decided that an inquest was unnecessary. Mr. Derr had done some writing before leaving the house and his daughter naturally supposed that he was doing some figuring on his new business venture at Keosauqua, however it was later discovered that the writing had been a hasty inventory of assets. He also took his keys and other articles from his pockets and placed them on a shelf in the house before going to the garage. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Bonaparte Presbyterian church and interment was in Bonaparte cemetery beside his wife. Source: Van Buren Co.
