Description	:	Claus was born in Klein-Fredenbeck, kreis Mulsum, across the Elbe from Hamburg, Germany. Claus immigrated 28 June 1865 from Germany and came first to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where he was employed at a sash and door factory for three years according the the 1918 Gage County history. From Wisconsin, Claus went to Logan County, Illinois, where he worked about ten years as a cabinet maker for Deming & Bree. The Lincoln, Illinois, city directory for 1871-72 confirms the Gage County history accounting of his occupation and employer as well as address as 1-2 Chicago Street. We do not know if he maintained this same address after marrying Lena in 1872. Shortly after their marriage at the Evangelical St. John's Church, they evidently were among those wanting to belong to a congregation that was wholly Lutheran as their sons were baptized in the newer congregation with the very long name of "the German Evangelical Lutheran Zion's Congregation of the Unaltered Augsburg Confession of West Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois." We wonder if the new preacher, H. Meyer from Hanover, was from Mulsum or if he was related to Claus' brother-in-law, Christoph Meyer. We have learned that there were deaths within this church due to an evident plague of "Black Small Pox" during the year they were married. In the Spring of 1876, Claus and Lena moved with their two young sons to Gage County, NE, settling near DeWitt. One source says that it took four, five or more days of fording streams just from the Missouri River with few homes (probably dug-outs or sod houses) along the way. We do not know where Claus filed his declaration of intent, but he was naturalized 22 March 1881 in Gage Co. NE. We are not sure if he learned much English. He probably did not need to as he lived in German communities after his immigration and the 1910 Gage County census shows him as German speaking although his children who were married by that time are listed as English speaking. Claus died before World War I when most German-American churches and schools changed to English due to anti-German sentiment among their neighbors. Claus Siems and secon wife, Amelia/Emilie Redmer, were married in 1906 late in life. They lived in Beatrice Nebraska where they died in 1910 and 1911.
