Edward Whealton, died at the ripe old age of 93 in the McCready Hospital here last Saturday, where he had been a patient for a short time. A native of Crisfield, the son of the late William and Nellie Lawson Whealton, and the husband of the late Mrs. Estelle Sterling Whealton, who died in 1949, he was a retired waterman and farmer. Edward Whealton, died at the ripe old age of 93 in the McCready Hospital here last Saturday, where he had been a patient for a short time. A native of Crisfield, the son of the late William and Nellie Lawson Whealton, and the husband of the late Mrs. Estelle Sterling Whealton, who died in 1949, he was a retired waterman and farmer. Short, sturdily built, Captain Ned was one of those old time, honest and industrious men, to whom independence of thought and action were inherent. Well up in his 80's, he went out in his boat and tonged oysters, planted and cultivated crops on his place in the Asbury section, keeping busy as he had been doing all through his life. He was a good neighbor, a pleasant man in his community, respected and liked by all who knew him, quick to respond to any call for help, sympathetic and understanding. For years he had been a member of the First Baptist Church, and he also was a member of the Order of Owls. For some time, he had been making his home with a nephew, William T. Sterling, in the same community where he had lived for so long. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday in the Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home here, conducted by Dr. J. Yancey Fincher, retired Baptist minister. Burial was in Asbury Methodist Cemetery. Surviving him are a sister, Mrs. Hattie Sewell of Hampton, Va., a brother, Ebe Whealton of Tampa, Fla., his nephew, Mr. Sterling, and several other nieces and nephews.
