Visits old home after an Absences of 52 & 36 Years Respectively: The following persons assembled at the home of Mrs. J. Wesley Hevener, near Hightown, Virginia on October 12 & decided to take a trip to Pendleton county, namely; Mrs. Malinda (McQuain) Hyre, Mrs. J. Wesley Hevener, John & Clemmie Ruckman and children Arnold, Elmer, Wreathie, Dahlia, Johnnie, and Virgin, Miss Emma Hevener and two brothers, Robert and William. It will be remembered by the older folks that Mrs. Hyre was a daughter of Thomas McQuain who was killed by two notorious scoundrels during the Civil War. Mrs. Hevener is a daughter of Mrs. Hyre and both were born at the old home place, (now Dahmer, Pendleton County) and the place now being owned by John Dahmer and Mrs. G.M. Blizzard. The day was pleasantly spent in visiting the scenes of their childhood and (Mrs. Hyre) twice secured a better half-first James Keister & second, Peter J. Hyre. They all paid tribute of respect to the grave of Thomas McQuain and if he had been living five generations would have been represented in person. A photograph of four generations was taken while there at the grave, also many other scenes were taken by Miss. Emma Hevener. But one scene they failed to get where Mrs. Hyre once gathered the sap from the lofty maples and converted it into the good old time sugar. The camp consisted of two large chestnut trees and a wall of rocks where the kettles were placed to boil the sugar water. Mrs. Hyre and Mrs. Hevener had in mind the cold spring and the still-house the latter in mind where Thomas McQuain used to distill the very best of apple-brandy & of course a few their friends would sometimes get a little tipsy and then the fantastic toe (?) was displayed with the greatest pleasure. Picnic dinner was served according to the directions of the two elderly ladies on the Old Home Place under a spreading chestnut tree near John Dahmer's house. The ladies referred to are 83 and 63 years old respectively, both arc quite active and can talk and laugh & may well be compared to jolly Gregory. About four o'clock p.m. all started homeward bound. Also see Jan. 12, 1956 Highland Recorder October 8, 1964 It was a great shock to hear of the death of Mrs. Clemmie Hevener Ruckman, 78, who died at her home at Hightown, September 24th. She was well known by the Dahmer family because we can trace back to seeing her mother, Mrs. Mahulda Keister, Mrs. Malinda Hyre, her grandmother. Also her great grandfather, Thomas McQuain owned the Dahmer farm at Dahmer. Highland Recorder October 1, 1964 Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p. m. for Mrs. Clemmie Hevener Ruckman, 78, who died a her home at Hightown Thursday. Sept. 24. Mrs. Ruckman had been in failing health for six years and had been seriously ill for the past five months. She was a daughter of J. Wesley and Mahilda Keister Hevener and was born in Highland April 4, 1886. She was a life-long member of Union Chapel Presbyterian Church where she served as organist for several years. Survivors are her husband, John A. Ruckman: two daughters, Miss Wreathia Ruckman and Mrs. Roy Waggoner, both of Highown; four sons, Arnold Ruckman, Bolar, Johnny Ruckman. Selma, Ala., Virgil Ruckman. Harrisonburg, and Elmer Ruckman, Hightown; a sister. Miss Emma Hevener of Huffer Nursing Home in Staunton; a brother, William W. Hevener, Hightown; 14 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. The service was conducted by the Rev. Mrs. Anne Hamrick from Union Chapel. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery with Obaugh Funeral Home in charge of arrangements
