No services are scheduled. Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw, MO, was in charge of arrangements. Clifford was born July 7, 1925, near Aurelia to Clifford Charles and Nota (Reckoff) Coombs. He grew up and graduated from high school in Iowa. August 23, 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army to serve as a veteran of World War II. May 25, 1944, he was united in marriage to Doris L. Owens in Topeka, Kan. Soon after, he was shipped overseas to Europe. He was assigned to the 89th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as an aerial gunner on a heavy bomber. Sept. 18, 1944, his plane was shot down over Holland and he became a prisoner-of-war. He was wounded and received a Purple Heart. June 6, 1945, he was returned to the U.S. to the O'Reilly General Hospital, Springfield, MO. Following his discharge Dec. 10, 1945, he and his wife returned to Iowa to make their home on a farm near Aurelia. There they would raise horses and cattle and their family of four children. They later owned and operated a restaurant and tavern in Aurelia for about five years. In 1973, they moved to Warsaw, MO. Tom was a member of the Greater Ozark Chapter of the POW Association, Springfield, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister – Betty Phipps; a brother – Joe Coombs; and a grandson – Adam Urbanski. Survivors include his wife; a son – Tom Richard and Denise Coombs, Camdenton, MO.; three daughters – Peggy Coombs, Dubuque; Darla and John Deihl, Warsaw, MO.; and Doreen and Brad Ebaugh, South Sioux City; three grandchildren; a brother – Jack Coombs, Aurelia; and other relatives.
