Shore OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, April 22, 1947 CLYDE LEROY JOHNSTON Clyde Leroy Johnston, son of John Sherman and Hattie Shore Johnston, was born in Lucas county, Iowa, January 21, 1891, and was found dead in his farm home in Pleasant township, April 2, 1947. He was aged 56 years, 2 months and 11 days at the time of his death. Clyde was the eldest of three children. He never married. His parents and one sister, Vera Johnston, preceded him in death, leaving one sister, Mrs. Mona Mart, of Columbia, Iowa and one niece, Mrs. Cumalene Miller, her husband and two children, of Decorah, Iowa, to mourn his departure. He attended the Lucas county public schools and then attended school in College View, Nebraska and at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. Nature had given him a good mind and through his study, reading, listening and observation he had acquired a wonderful fund of knowledge. He possessed a natural aptitude for mechanical work and enjoyed spending his leisure time in constructing devices. After he finished school, he went to Canada, where he homesteaded and farmed for three years. He then came back to Lucas county where he has since made his home, six years of which time was spent as a mechanic in a factory at Newton. For more than 15 years Clyde has been a victim of diabetes. At times it seemed he could scarcely withstand the ravages, but with an indomitable courage, he would pull himself together again and carry on. The last ten years of his life he has operated the family farm. He spent the winters at his home in Columbia and about ten days prior to his death, had come back to the farm to begin preparations for the seasons farming activities. It was on Wednesday afternoon that his aunt, Mrs. O. B. Shore, called at his house and found his lifeless body, as though he had silently slipped away in his sleep. Clyde's natural inclination and the condition of his health served to make him a lover of solitude, yet he loved to have his friends visit him and he enjoyed going to their homes to spend the evening in quiet conversation and reminiscences. His going has brought sadness to many friends and relatives. Funeral services, in charge of the Rev. James McKean were held at the Zion Methodist church, Saturday afternoon, April 5, 1947, and burial was made in the Zion cemetery.
