HATTIE SHORE JOHNSTON Hattie Shore Johnston, daughter of Alfred and Jennie Kesselring Shore, was born in Pleasant township, Lucas county, Iowa, on October 28, 1873, and passed away at her home in Columbia, Iowa, on March 6, 1945, at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 8 days. Mrs. Johnston's health had not been the best for several years but her death came unexpectedly after a few hours illness, having suffered a stroke of paralysis near 5 o'clock Tuesday morning and the end came near noon the same day. In February, 1890, she was united in marriage to John Sherman Johnston, whose death occurred October 3, 1921. To them were born three children, Clyde Johnston of Pleasant township; Mrs. Mona Mart of Columbia; and Miss Vera Johnston, who died in May, 1915, at the age of nineteen years. She also leaves one granddaughter, Mrs. Everett Miller of Decorah, Iowa, whose husband is an officer in the Navy and has been stationed in India. One great grandchild, Linda Kay Miller also survives. Her only sister, Mrs. Gertie Shore Watts, was called to her heavenly home, July 6, 1944, in Upper Lake, California, and her only brother, Oren Bert Shore, preceded her in death just two weeks ago. In early girlhood Mrs. Johnston was converted and united with the Zion Methodist church, where she still maintained her membership. Her recent activities, as far as health would permit, were connected more with the Columbia Methodist church. She loved nature in all its aspects and her love for flowers was known to everyone. Her home and surroundings were a veritable bower of beauty with its variety of choice and rare plants and bloom which seemed to respond copiously to her magic touch. The last 32 years of Mrs. Johnston's life were spent in Columbia, Iowa, where she will be greatly missed among her neighbors and friends. Her children and granddaughter will always cherish tender memories of her great motherly heart and of her love and sacrifice for their well-being. Many other relatives and friends mourn the loss of this beloved woman. Funeral services, conducted by her pastor, Rev. John Beebout, were held Thursday morning at 11 o'clock at the Zion Methodist church and burial was in the Zion cemetery. Music was furnished by a trio consisting of Mrs. Carol Whitlatch, Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Jay Batten, with Mrs. Louis Westman at the piano. Pallbearers were H. W. Shore, W. O. Shore, E. B. Shore, John Umbenhower, Shelby White and Dave Westman. The floral offerings, in all their glorious beauty, were silent expressions of sympathy for the beareaved and love for the deceased.
