James Norman Boyer, 68, San Antonio, Texas, died Jan. 10, 1988, at a nursing home in San Antonio. He was born March 2, 1919, at Valley Falls, the son of Max and Inez May Falls Boyer. He attended school at Valley Falls and was graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1937. Norman enlisted with the Kansas National Guard and was sent to Camp Robinson, Ark. When World War II began he was sent to officers school and then commissioned in the Army Medical Administrative Corps. His unit landed in Normandy, France, June 8, 1944, and then went on through France, The Bulge, and on into Germany. His first peacetime overseas duty was at the Army hospital in Guam. His later duty in Korea required that he organize the first Mobile Ambulance Surgical Hospital Unit. These units are the basis for the television series MAS*H. During the Viet Nam Conflict he was stationed at the hospital in Saigon. After Retirement from the service, he has lived at Valley Falls and was currently making his home in San Antonio. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Grahem-Herbers Post No. 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars, both at Valley Fall; Meriden Lodge No. 236, A.F. and A.M., Meriden; and Scottish Rite Bodies and Arab Shrine, Topeka. He was a former member of the Valley Falls Rotary Club. He was married to Ruth Rogers. She died in 1977. He was later married to Mae Dawson. They were divorced. Survivors include two sons, James Max Boyer, San Francisco, Calif., and Bruce Boyer, Eureka, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Lou Rogers, San Diego, Calif., and Maxine Schweikhard, Encinitas, Calif.,; and two brothers, Eugene Boyer, Topeka, and Ralph Boyer, Valley Falls. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan 16, at the Nellis-Hagge Funeral Home, Valley Falls. Grahem-Herbers Post No. 3084, VFW, and Meriden Masonic Lodge No. 236 will conduct graveside services at the Valley Falls Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Shrine burn center to be left at the funeral home. Mr. Boyer will lie in state after noon Thursday at the funeral home.
