C.E. Perkins' address at the funeral.] Colin Samuel, third in the family of five children of Dr. William Craig and his wife Annie, first saw the light at Keosauqua, April 14, 1866. He was discharged from his early service, Oct. 25, 1908, at Norfolk, Va., being on that date 42 years, 6 months and 11 days old. His death was due to acute gastritis. He leaves surviving him a sister, Miss Jean Craig, and three brothers: Hugh B., of Chicago; Dr. Wm. G., of Springfield, Mass., and Dr. James A., of Keosauqua. His boyhood was passed here, in his native town, and here he attended the public schools. When he was seventeen he received an appointment as naval cadet in the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, his appointment bearing date, May 17, 1883. June 10, 1887, after four years of study and training, he received his diploma, preparatory to the prescribed two years' cruise. After graduation he spent the summer on the U.S.S. "Galena," in the St. Lawrence river. Ordered thence to the west coast of the Isthmus of Panama, he joined the cruiser "Marion," and set out on a voyage to the Asiatic countries beyond the Pacific. At Shanghai, China, he was smitten with typhoid fever and was very ill. This was in the winter of 1889. When convalescent he came home, going to Annapolis for his final graduation, which took place June 1, 1889. At that date the United States had not yet begun the building of the new navy and there were not ships enough in the old navy to afford posts for all the naval graduates. For lack of vacancies in the service, therefore, Lieut. Craig with others, (all except five or six of his classmates), received an honorable discharge, accompanied by a year's pay. But he was only a very brief time without government employment. He was placed at work in the Hydrographic office first at Norfolk, Va., and later at Washington. Transferred from this situation he, in the fall of 1890, was appointed to a third lieutenancy in the Revenue Cutter service. Indue time he was promoted to be second lieutenant, and four years ago was raised in rank to first lieutenant. While in the Revenue Cutter service, twelve years ago, Lieut. Craig made a cruise in the little ship "Perry" from New York to Behring's sea through the straits of Magellan, stopping en voyage at all the ports on both coasts of South America and the Pacific coast of the United States. It was while on this long cruise that the mother died and it was months after her death before the sad news reached him. When it became evident that there would be serious trouble with Spain, in the spring of 1898, Lieut. Craig, then at San Francisco, was summoned on "hurry orders" to Norfolk, Va. Reaching Norfolk he was at once dispatched to Tampa, Fla., where he joined the U.S.S. "Morrill," and was on blockade duty off Havana until the close of hostilities. The Spanish war at an end, Lieut. Craig returned to the Revenue Cutter service and served on the great lakes with headquarters at Milwaukee, and at various stations on the Atlantic coast. In April, 1906, he was detailed as Inspector of the 7th Life Saving District, embracing the stormy and dangerous coast lying between Cape Henry and Cape Fear, with headquarters at Elizabeth City, N.C. It was while engaged in this service, one of the most humane and beneficent of all the undertakings of our government, that he received orders from the Great Commander of all who "go down to sea in the ships," to report for duty in another world.
