Read More	JEAN CRAIG (Written by Robert McBeth, lifetime friend of the Craig family) Miss Jean Craig was born in Keosauqua, Iowa, October 20, 1861, and passed away at her home in Keosauqua, September 3, 1944. She was the daughter of Dr. William and Annie Brown Craig and is survived by her brother, Dr. James A. Craig, and his daughter, Elizabeth Craig. Besides her parents, three brothers, Colin, Hugh and William, preceded her in death. The life of the Craig family is inndelibly interwoven into the life and history of the town of Keosauqua, in which, for so many years, this family has formed an integral part. Her father, Dr. William Craig, was a pioneer physician in this town and community and at his death his mantle fell on his son, Dr. James A. Craig, who continues to carry on. For more than seventy years, Miss Craig has been a member of the Congregational church of Keosauqua; and from her early childhod days, when it was the good custom for families to attend church, she was to be seen with her father and mother and all members of the Craig family in the Craig pew, in this church. She regularly attended its services until failing health prevented her so doing. She was a loyal supporter of the church and the various branches of its activity. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter I of Keosauqua for more than 57 years and a member of the Lynds Chapter No. 27 O.E.S. of Keosauqua for more than 25 years. She was of artistic temperament. She studied both art and music and in early life devoted much time to painting and music, particularly painting, and in the old home now are yet to be found a number of paintings which reflect her skill. She was a most interesting person to know, she was well educated, a great reader, was possessed of a remarkable memory, was deeply interested in community and public affairs and a delightful conversationalist. Her life was devoted to her home, her family, her friends, her church, her P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Eastern Star. Keosauqua was her home throughout her life, and she passed away at the Craig homestead, which she continued to occupy after the death of her father and mother. With her passing, this community cherishes the memory of a beautiful and worthy life, and of a good, true and kindly woman. - - - - - (By The Rev. Edna Fellows) I would like to add a wee tribute of my own. There is a physical motherhood and a soul motherhood. The latter was hers when she took the little motherless niece, Elizabeth, into her heart and home, lavishing upon her the richness and rare beauty of her own life. I have also learned to love the little Congregational church on the hill; to cherish its history, its bravery, traditions and the beauty of its sanctuary as I have seen it thru her eyes. My life is richer for having known her. - - - - - Funeral services were held at the Burnett Funeral Home in Keosauqua at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, September 10, 1944, in charge of the Rev. Edna M. Fellows, assisted by the Rev. Treverton Warren. Interment was at Purdom cemetery at Keosauqua. Source: Van Buren Co.
