Rep. 11 Oct. 1934 Hugh Brown Craig Hugh Brown Craig, eldest son of William and Annie Brown Craig, was born in Keosauqua, Iowa, on March 18, 1864, and passed away Sept. 7, 1934. After completing the work in the schools he entered his father's drug store in Keosauqua where he studied pharmacy. He passed the state examinations in both Iowa and Illinois and was registered in these states. After becoming a registered pharmacist he went to Creston, Iowa, where he remained a year; from there he went to Des Moines for several years, and from Des Moines he went to Chicago where he lived for about forty years. He continued in the drug business for a number of years, then became a salesman for a butterine company for a short time, after which he became a member of the King Lumber Co. of Chicago. He continued with this company as city salesman until he became ill and had to return to his old home in Keosauqua six years ago. He was a loyal and enthusiastic Mason, all of his memberships being in Chicago. He was a member of Aaron lodge, A. F. & A. M.; Medina Temple, Mystic Shrine; and the Scottish Rite consistory of Chicago. He was never married and is survived only by his sister, Jean Craig, and brother, Dr. J. A. Craig of Keosauqua; his niece, Elizabeth Craig of Yuba City, Calif, a nephew, Gibson Craig of Springfield, Mass., a sister in law, Mrs. J. A. Craig of Keosauqua, and a sister in law Mrs. W. G. Craig of Springfield, Mass. He was reared in the Congregational church and upon his visits home in Keosauqua was a regular attendant at its services, and was always a liberal supporter in its financial needs. He was a typical gentleman of the "Old School", always careful of his personal appearance, kindly, courteous and considerate in his dealings with other people, and helpful to those in need wherever he met them. He exemplified the true ideal of gentlemanly courtesy. While much of his life was spent away from Keosauqua, yet he was always identified with the community life and took and held his part in it as one of us, and in his death the community loses an honored, respected and helpful citizen. Funeral services were held from the home. Burial was made in the Purdom cemetery. Pall bearers were: Lee Daughrity, Keokuk; J.A. Johnston, Hugh Sloan, J.A. Craig, Henry Marriott, and Henry Strickling. Source: Van Buren Co.
