She was born near Hemingway, Williamsburg County, SC on August 25, 1976 and died in Columbia, Richland Co., SC on November 4, 1954. She was a member of the first graduating class of Winthrop College and was one of 31 graduates that earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1900. She was an outstanding teacher at several schools near her home, having been one of the first teachers of the Old Johnsonville School at Venters, SC, she also taught at the Union School and the Timmonsville School. In 1929 she furthered her education at the Pratt Institute School of Library Sciences in Brooklyn, New York and was an instructor of Library Science and assistant librarian at the University of South Carolina for many years. While there, she was in charge of the Carolinian Library section from 1929 to 1931. She was a member of the Union Methodist Church, where she had been active in church work. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son and siblings. Her only living relatives at the time of her death were two step-children and her extended family. Cora Estelle Huggins Johnson was buried in the family plot in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery beside her parents. Her husband, Dr. Liston Bass Johnson is buried beside his first wife in the Williamsburg Presbyterian Cemetery in Kingstree, SC. MRS. L. B. JOHNSON Hemingway, Nov. 4- Mrs. Cora Huggins Johnson,80, widow of Dr. L. B. Johnson,of Union section Williamsburg County, died Thursday in Columbia. Mrs. Johnson, whose husband was a pioneer medical practitioner in this section, was a member of the first graduating class of Winthrop College. She was one of the first teachers at the Old Johnsonville School at Ard's Crossroads and also taught at Timmonsville High School in Timmonsville, SC. She did post-graduate work at Pratt Institute of Library Science in New York and received her certificate from that school in 1929. She was assistant librarian and instructor in library science at the University of South Carolina for many years. While there, she was in charge of the Carolinian Library section from 1929 to 1931. In 1933 she was listed in Who's Who in America for outstanding library service. Before this she taught in schools near her home. She was one of the first teachers at the Old Johnsonville School at Venters, SC and she taught at the Union School. Her son, Dr. Allen Huggins Johnson,founded the Johnson Memorial Hospital here(Hemingway, SC). He also held wide business interests. She was born near Hemingway, daughter of the late Robert Thompson and Mary Elizabeth Stone Huggins. She was a member of the Union Methodist Church, where she had been active in church work. Funeral services were held at 4:15 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Morris Funeral Home in Hemingway, the Rev. H. J. Bennett, Jr, pastor of Hemingway Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wilson DuRant, Bethel Rhem, Algie Coker, E. W. Hart, J. E. Doster and Marion Baxley. Surviving ar a step-son, D. L.
