Description	:	Cora Helen Edwards, the oldest of five children of Charles A. and Effie (Fuhrer) Edwards, was born December 10, 1911 on the family homestead north of Clearfield, Tripp County, South Dakota. She passed away March 28, 2009 at the Sanford Care Center in Vermillion, South Dakota. In 1920 after the family lost their homestead, they lived near Naper, Nebraska for two years before moving back to the Winner, South Dakota area. She passed away March 28, 2009 at the Sanford Care Center in Vermillion, South Dakota. In 1920 after the family lost their homestead, they lived near Naper, Nebraska for two years before moving back to the Winner, South Dakota area. Cora attended rural schools through the ninth grade and quit formal education when it became necessary for her to help at home. She also helped neighbor families with household work. In the mid-1930's while working as a cook and waitress at Burda's Sweet Shop in Winner, she met Royal Scott from Vermillion. Royal was employed by the Soil Conservation Service and left Winner to work in Rapid City; Sioux Falls; Mandan, North Dakota; and Lincoln, Nebraska, but they got together wheneve they could. In January 1940, Royal went to work for the Army at Raritan Arsenal in Metuchen, New Jersey. In June 1940 he returned to Winner, married Cora on the 16th, and they left for Highland Park, New Jersey. Their only child, Luann Kay, was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. During World War II, while Royal was traveling for the Army, Cora was essentially a "single" parent. In November 1952 Cora, Royal, and Luann moved to Huntsville, Alabama when the rocket program started. Luann moved to Vermillion in 1955 to attend high school, Cora came in 1962 to help care for her mother-in-law, and Royal followed in 1966 upon his retirement from NASA. Cora enjoyed gardening but was most comfortable in the kitchen or taking care of her family. Her granddaughter Lynn was her pride and joy. In 1987 Cora received the DIANA Award from the Vermillion ESA chapters for her unselfish service to others in the community. She was a long-time member of the Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, holding numerous elected positions. She also taught Sunday School and was recognized in Fall 1997 as a 50-year member of the United Methodist Women and its forerunners. After Royal's passing in April 1999, Cora moved into Dakota Gardens Apartments in Vermillion. Polio at age five left Cora with weakness in her leg and ankle muscles and in later years hampered her mobility. After a stroke in May 2000, she was unable to walk or stand. Since then, she had been a resident of the Sioux Valley/Sanford Vermillion Care Center where she was lovingly cared for. She is survived by her daughter, Luann Ouellette of Vermillion; her granddaughter, Lynn and husband, Matt Dassow of Paris, France; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Edwards and Mary Edwards, both of Winner; three nieces and eight nephews. Cora was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Jesse Roberts; her sister, Bettie Martha; her brothers, Alton and Lester; and her niece, Betty Ann Stoner. Memorials may be given to the Vermillion Welcome Table. Visitation will be from 11 to 12 p.m., Thursday, April 2, 2009 with a lunch at 12 p.m., at United Methodist Church, Vermillion. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 2, 2009 at United Methodist Church with Rev. Brook McBride officiating. Burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery, Vermillion.
