Description	:	CHARLESTON, ILLINOIS -- Cora M. Aten, age 90, of Charleston, IL died Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at Charleston Rehab and Health Care Center. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 20, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church, in Yankton with Rev. Dean Trapp officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories. Visitations will be from 5-8 PM, Sunday, November 19, 2006 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD with an Order of Eastern Star Service at 7:00 PM. Honorary pallbearers are Chris Aten, Patrick Aten and Laddie Kostel. Cora Mae Sloan was born March 5, 1916 in Endicott, NE, the oldest child of Roger and Marie (Moser) Sloan. The family moved to the Ragan, NE area when she was an infant. She attended and was a graduate of the Ragan Consolidated School, one of the first consolidated schools in the state. In high school, she was active in 4-H, orchestra, Girls? Glee Club, and took the state accredited high school normal training courses passing all the exams. For several years, she taught in a rural school near Alma, NE. She was united in marriage to Lloyd B. Aten on November 23, 1935 in Kearney, NE. To this union were born two sons -- Dennis Wayne Aten in 1937 and Ronald Bruce Aten in 1944. For two years, Cora was employed by the local telephone office in Ragan, NE. They lived in several states over the years, including Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa before residing in Tabor in 1950. While living in Tabor, her husband, Lloyd was employed at BY Electric as a manager and upon his retirement, they moved to Yankton. Cora was a member of the United Methodist Churches in Ragan, NE, Springfield, Tyndall, and Yankton. She was very active in the United Methodist Women in Tyndall and Yankton, where she held the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and other offices at various times. Her memberships also extend to the Order of the Eastern Star in Springfield, Tyndall, and Yankton, where she held all offices but two at various times, and the United Methodist Administration Board in Tyndall and Yankton. For several years, she was a member of the hand bell choir. Her memory will be cherished by her two sons: Dennis of Charleston, IL and Ron of Abilene, TX; her brother, Dale Sloan of Springfield, IL; five grandchildren: Keith Aten of Gardner, KS, Kevin Aten of Cerro Gordo, IL, Lori Aten of Charleston, IL, Chris Aten of Wichita Falls, TX, and Patrick Aten of Lubbock, TX; five great grandchildren: Christina Purcell, Leanna Purcell, Sarah Aten, Ashley Purcell, and Paul Aten, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lloyd in 1991, three brothers: Wayne Sloan in 1934 in an accident, Larry Sloan in 2000, Glen Sloan in 2004, a sister, Roselyn Kasson in 1996.
