Description	:	Cornelius Francis Fischer, called Con or Bud Fischer, passed away December 27 at Bethany Heights in Council Bluffs, Iowa, age of 99, after complications from a stroke. He was born 7/14/21 to Anthony (Tony) Fischer and Mary (Hannifan) Fischer in a farmhouse between Neola and Bentley, Iowa. He was named after his grandfathers, Con Hannifan and Frank Fischer. Read More	Cornelius Francis Fischer, called Con or Bud Fischer, passed away December 27 at Bethany Heights in Council Bluffs, Iowa, age of 99, after complications from a stroke. He was born 7/14/21 to Anthony (Tony) Fischer and Mary (Hannifan) Fischer in a farmhouse between Neola and Bentley, Iowa. He was named after his grandfathers, Con Hannifan and Frank Fischer. He attended Bentley School through tenth grade, and finished high school at St. Joseph School in Neola. His Father bought him a pony to provide transportation to school. After graduation in the Class of 1938, he attended Van Sant School of Business in Omaha. In August, 1939, he found an office job with International Harvester Company in Omaha. For the duration of World War II, he received a medical deferment by the Douglas County, Nebraska Draft Board for a heart condition. In 1942, the Harvester Company asked him to be an assistant to a traveling Auditor. This took him to Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Milwaukee, and Chicago. Most of his travels were by rail. Chicago was a nice place, but in September 1943, he decided it did not offer him what a farm 1 1/2 miles north of Bentley did. He became a farmer with his father that fall. On August 9, 1947, he married his high school sweetheart Dolores Berens of Neola, and they started their farm life on the farm 1/2 mile north of his parents. In their early farming career, Con was active with Farm Bureau, West Pottawattamie Extension, a 4-H leader, Assessor for Norwalk Township. He was Secretary-Treasurer for the Bentley School System until it consolidated with the Underwood School District. In 1948, his Brother Leo joined the farming operation. Con and Leo and their Father Tony farmed together as A.J. Fischer and Sons until 1960. Con and Leo farmed together for the next 25 years as a partnership named Fischer Brothers. Loads of cattle too many to count left their feedlots on Ring Brothers trucks for the Stockyards of Omaha, where they were consigned to Wood Brothers Commission Company. Con and Dolores raised children Mary Jo, Dorothy, and John in their farmhouse. In 1957 following the death of his Mother, Con's Father, Tony, moved in and lived there until his death in 1973. Con & Dolores and family were one of the Farm Families of the Week on WOWT in those years. Con retired from farming in 1985, but kept an interest watching the Neola and Underwood area farmers. He helped haul in the harvested crops for son John until the age of 90. Con and Dolores lived on that farm for 66 1/2 years before buying a house on Sunset Drive in Underwood. In August 2019 they moved to Bethany Heights. Con was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Helen Clare Murphy and Rosemary Schwertley, brothers Paul and Leo Fischer. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Dolores, daughters Mary Jo Dobrydney (Frank) of Springfield VA, and Dorothy Mauro (Michael) of Des Moines, and son John Fischer (Mary) of Neola. He also is survived by a sister, Marilyn Carr of Platteville, WS., sister in law Pauline Fischer of Des Moines, nine grandchildren and twenty four great grandchildren. He and Dolores were life- long members of St. Patrick's Church of Neola, where a private service will be held on Saturday , January 2, 2021 In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the St. Patrick Church Foundation, St. Albert Schools, either the Neola or Underwood Fire and Rescue Departments, or a favorite charity of your choice. The family thanks the staff of Bethany Heights and Every Step Hospice for their wonderful care. The Church will be open at 9 a.m. Saturday for those who would like to sign the book prior to the private family service. Burial will be in the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Neola. She married her 1938 Neola St. Joseph School classmate, Con Fischer, in 1947, after living and working in Omaha, Neb., as a stenographer for several years. They lived on the farm south of Neola for 66 and a half years, and raised three children, Mary Jo Dobrydney (Frank), Dorothy Mauro (Mike), and John Fischer (Mary). They moved to Underwood, Iowa, in 2013 and to Bethany Heights Assisted Living in 2019.
