Was Member of Montana Society of Pioneers. Lived Entire Life in State The community was shocked late Saturday evening to learn of the death of one of its most highly respected citizens, Cornelius H. Thorpe, who passed away at St. Clare hospital after only a few hours illness. Mr. Thorpe was around town during all of Saturday morning and was a caller for a few minutes at this office and seemed in good health, although he had been in rather poor health for the past several months. Right after the noon hour he went to the court house where he was to get a clock for repairing and it was while taking the clock down in the sheriff's office that he first complained of feeling dizzy. After getting the clock he went to the drug Lockwood drug store where he stated he was feeling ill and he then called his wife to come after him in the car. He was taken home and about 5 o'clock was taken to St. Clare hospital, where he passed away a few hours later, death being due to apoplexy. His passing removed from Fort Benton another of the fast disappearing band of Montana pioneers, who came to the state prior to Dec. 1868. Mr. Thorpe's entire life has been spent in the state of Montana. He was born at Helena on Aug. 10, 1868, where he spent the greater portion of his life. He also lived for a number of years on Highwood. A number of years ago he came to Fort Benton where he learned his trade as watchmaker under C. N. (Cash) Lanning. He followed the machinist's trade for a number and was an expert macinist as well as watchmaker. After learning the trade he located at other points, returning to Fort Benton in 1922, where he has since resided and where he has had charge of the jewelry department of the D. G. Lockwood drug store. Held in the very highest esteem of everyone who knew him he will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. Mr. and Mrs. Thorpe have made their home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Bright, since coming to this city. Mr. Thorpe is survived by his wife of this city; a brother, L. W. Thorpe, of Billings, Mont., and other relatives and a host of friends all over the state who will mourn his passing. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Louther chapel. Interment will be made in Riverside Cemetery.
