Aten 1901 CHAPTER XXIX. Pages 375-392 CORPORAL WILLIAM D. ALKIRE was born in Menard county, Illinois, August 23, 1838, and was a married farmer when he enlisted from Mason county. He served with his company through all the campaigns in which the regiment was engaged until captured at the battle of Peach Tree creek, Georgia, July 19, 1864; was held prisoner until April 28, 1865, when he was exchanged. He was slightly wounded in the assault of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, June 27, 1864, was promoted corporal and honorably discharged June 27, 1865. He removed to Iowa in August, 1865, has been justice of the peace in Cass county; is farming, and resides in Thurman, Fremont county, Iowa. Company C was enrolled by Samuel Black, a farmer residing near Mason City, between July 23 and August 15, 1862, the entire company, except two – one from Logan and one from Peoria – enlisting from Mason county. At the organization of the company the following commissioned officers were elected: Samuel Black, captain; George A. Blanchard, first lieutenant, and Dr. William W. Walker, second lieutenant. Of the 102 officers and men originally mustered in 8 were killed in action, 7 died of wounds, and 14 were hit whose wounds did not prove fatal while in the service, 22 died of disease, 24 were discharged for disability, 7 were transferred, 2 officers resigned and 31 officers and men were mustered out with the regiment. The company bore well its part, and did its full share in making history of the regiment one of which its members may be justly proud. *********** Courtesy of FindaGrave member Richard #47473943: William D. Alkire was born in Mendard County Illinois August 22, 1838 and died at his home in Stanton January 14, 1918. Age 79 years 4 months and 23 days. He was married to Elizabeth Lane, 1860, to this union were born 6 children, John W., Isac L. Alkire, Mrs. T. B. Prescott, of Stanton; Mrs. Anna Fahler of Arthur, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Cummings, of Lebanon, Mo.; and Mrs. John Mudra, who died Aug. 1906. He united with the Christian Church at an early age and has always tried to live the Christian life. He was an old soldier, one among the 85th regiment of Ill. Co. C. Volunteers and was among the prisoners in Andersonville for 9 months and 9 days. He leaves to mourn his loss, one sister, Mrs. Lane, of Albia, Ia.; 2 Sons and 3 Daughters; 20 Grandchildren, and 8 Great Grand Children, beside, a host of other relatives and friends.
