Courtney was a US Marine Corps veteran. Courtney enjoyed a 38-year banking career starting in 1947 and retiring on August 31, 1987 as President and CEO of First United Bank and Trust in Oakland, MD. After retiring, he served 20 years as a member of the Board of Directors of Capon Valley Bank and Highland Bankshares, Inc., thus completing a total of 58 years of banking experience.
