Ingman, one of Villisca's most esteemed and highly respected pioneer citizens died at the Hotel Ingman last Thursday eying about 10:45 of apoplexy. Mr. Ingman had been confined to his bed since August 22, when he cuffed the first stroke of paralysis and had been very low since. He suffered another on the 22nd of September, which resulted in his death last Thursday. With the death of "Uncle Joe" Ingman, as he was called by a majority of citizens of Villisca has lost one of the early pioneers and boulders of the present city. He came to the city in 1872, entering the dry goods store with his cousin, G. P. Ingman, as a clerk. After three years he became a partner in the shoe store with Henry Smith, in which business he remained until 1895, when he founded the Ingman Hotel on lower Third Avenue. Mr. Ingman was undoubtedly one of the best landlords on the "Q" system and had almost a national reputation with the traveling public. It made no difference what he had to contend with, you always found "Uncle Joe" the same genial, obliging, good natured fellow who was never too busy nor too tired to go out of his way for the purpose of conferring a favor upon his friends and customers. He always wore that cheerful make-up that won him so many friends among travelers and made Villisca think so much of him. The Ingman Hotel was furnished a comfortable refuge for many a weary traveler and recently was remodeled in every room, painted and papered and built anew until it is one of the coziest and prettiest hotels in the state. It will continue to be managed by Mrs. Ingman and son, Forrest, who has assisted his father in its management to a great extent and knows every angle of the business. Joseph T. Ingman was born in Ashland County, Ohio, April 14, 1842 and was at the time of his death 71 years, 5 months, and 11 days of age. When a young man he was a soldier in the War of the Rebellion, enlisting in Company H. of the 42nd Ohio Volunteers and served three years and three months in this war. In 1867 he came to Tipton, Iowa and worked in Dean Bros. Store as clerk. He was married here to Miss Anna C. Palmer, November 21, 1871 and the following year they moved to Villisca, where they have resided since. Mr. Ingman was a clerk in the dry goods sore of his cousin, G. P. Ingman, three years. Then he went into the boot and shoe business with Henry Smith. In 1895 Mr. Ingman and son founded the Hotel Ingman and had remained in that business until the elder Mr. Ingman's death. He died at the hotel last Thursday evening, September 25, 1913, and the funeral services were held from the hotel Sunday afternoon at 3:30, conducted by Rev. W. J. Ewing, of the Presbyterian Church. A large number of friends attended the funeral services , thus showing Villisca's esteem for one of her most beloved citizens. Mr. Ingman belonged to the G.A.R. Lodge and took a prominent part in the work of that organization. He is survived by a wife, a son, four brothers, and an adopted daughter. His wife and son, Forrest, who live in Villisca, his daughter, Mrs. Clyde Turner, of Proctor, Minnesota, who was adopted by Mr. and rms. Ingman when a small child and brother, F. L. of Villisca, were present during his last hours. His brothers, William, Alva, and Edmund, of Gernomersville, Ohio were unable to be present at the death or funeral. William and Alva were here the last of August visiting their relatives and wee with Mr. Ingman during his first affliction. The text of the services conducted by Rev. Ewing was from Amos 5:8; "Seek Him that turners the Shadow of Death into the morning." A quartette composed of Miss Ruth Means, Mrs. D. R. Barker, and Messrs Harold Todd and W. s. Bell sang, "Jesus Lover of My Soul," "Nearer My God To Thee," and "Rock Of Ages." at the services. The pall bearers were G. B. Sexton, David Whitmyer, W. S. Alger, I. M. Wickersham, C. N. Stodard, and W. D. Reynolds. Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. Villisca Review, Villisca, Iowa, Thursday, October 2, 1913, page9 Enlisted as a Private on 21 Aug 1861. Mustered in Company H 42nd Ohio Infantry on 27 Nov 1861. Mustered out on 18 Nov 1864. Transferred to Company E 96th Ohio 96th Infantry on 18 Nov 1864. Promoted to Full Corporal on 2 Feb 1865. Mustered out on 7 Jul 1865 at Mobile, Alabama.
