Pierce Duane De Jong was born June 5, 1929, in rural Maurice, Iowa, to Dick and Gertrude (Schuerr) De Jong. He was known to many as "Pitts". He was baptized at First Reformed Church in Maurice. He attended school in Maurice, graduating from high school in 1947. Following high school, he drove a truck for Phil Groetken Trucking in Le Mars. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from October 1851 to October 1953. He continued with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves until October 1959. He was united in marriage to Alma McPherson on June 12, 1953, in Hawarden, Iowa. Following his discharge from active duty, the couple lived in Hawarden, Le Mars, and Maurice. In 1974, they moved to Remsen. He managed the Struble, Iowa Elevator for 12 years. He later worked at the Remsen Roller Mill from 1974 until his retirement in 1994. After his retirement, he drove a truck for Plymouth County Landfill a few years. The couple was members of Presbyterian United Church of Christ. He was honored as a 60-year member of the American Legion Heeren-McHale-Wilken Post 724. He enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Alma of Remsen; four children and their spouses, Cindy and Brad Athens of Le Mars, Iowa, Perry and Kathy De Jong of Le Mars, Dona and Bryan McMasters of Ames, Iowa, and Amy and Joe Lechtenberg of Sioux City, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Abby Penning, Ben Penning, Andru Athens, Corey DeJong and his fiancee, Suzanne Weber, Angie and her husband, Zach Davis, Dylan McMasters, Connor McMasters, Haley Lechtenberg and Jordyn Lechtenberg; three brothers and their wives, John and Leola De Jong of Maurice, Iowa; Milo and Neva De Jong of Washington, and Nelson and Leni De Jong of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters and their husbands, Greta and John DeZeeuw of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Nelvina and Gerald Wissink of Sioux Center, Iowa; several in-laws; and nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Gertrude De Jong. Services: Presbyterian United Church of Christ - Le Mars, Iowa Officiant: Rev.
