Craig known by his friends and family as "Captain" was born December 14, 1836 in Ohio. He came to Madison County in a prairie schooner drawn by an oxen team and arrived here May 2, 1869. He settled about 3 miles west of Norfolk. He was survived by 3 daughters: Mrs. Minerva Fitch of Norfolk, Mrs. Savilla Best of Battle Creek, Mrs. J. L. {Ariel} Long of Neligh; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren. His only son A. E. Craig died a little more than a year ago. His wife died more than 21 years ago. Six grandsons were pall bearers; Melvin Fitch of Omaha, Ralph Craig of Columbus, Glenn Fitch, Clyde Fitch, Dewey Craig and Warren Wolfe all of Norfolk. Craig was appointed 2nd Lieutenant of Company G, a company then being organized in response to President Lincoln's call for 300,000 volunteers with Iowa having a quota of five new regiments. John and his brother, Cyrus, were mustered into the Company at Camp Franklin, Dubuque, on August 22,1862, and into the 21st Iowa Volunteer Infantry on September 9, 1862, also at Camp Franklin. At Salem, Missouri, on October 23, 1862, he signed the oath of office as 2nd Lieutenant. Effective May 27, 1863, during the siege at Vicksburg, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Vicksburg surrendered on July 4, 1863, and the regiment then participated in an expedition to Jackson, Mississippi. On its return to Vicksburg, John Craig signed the oath as 1st Lieutenant on August 3, 1863. When John Dolson resigned as Captain, John Craig was promoted again and on August 31, 1863, signed the oath agreeing to "faithfully discharge the duties of Captain of Co. 'G' 21st Reg.
