Born in Crisfield, Md., Captain Ford began his career on the water aboard his father's oyster-dredger nearly 70 years ago. Was Naval Reservist In the Navy during World War I, Captain Ford was assigned to duty on the Atlantic coast. After the war, he became a member of the Naval Reserve, from which he retired in 1948. During the 1920's, Captain Ford gained experience aboard numerous merchant ships. During his 10 years with the old Consolidated Navigation Company, he went to the Orient and Europe. Captain Ford worked for several West Coast firms after the Depression, but returned to Maryland when the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal was reopened to allow passage of larger vessels. C. & D. Canal Pilot Until World War II, he was a pilot on the C. & D. Canal. His daughter recalled yesterday that Captain Ford seldom needed a tugboat to bring ships through the canal, but guided ships through unassisted. During the war years, Captain Ford was captain aboard landing ships at Normandy, Anzio, Salerno and Algiers. He also captained ships taking troops across the Atlantic. Captain Ford served on the U.S.S. Louis B. Marshall on D-Day. Judson M. Kneece, chief engineer of that ship, said that only 16 ships had special equipment for loading and unloading the large tanks during the invasion. Put 27 Shipments Ashore Mr. Kneece said their ship put 27 shipments of troops on the Normandy beachhead. Besides his wife, Captain Ford is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Helen Stevens, Mrs. Lois McFarland and Mrs. Nancy Tinkler; a brother, J. Otis Ford, all of Baltimore, and four grandchildren.
