Death followed an attack of pneumonia. Mr. Smith had also suffered a stroked of paralysis on the Saturday preceding his death. Mr. Smith was a son of Hiram L. Smith and Phoebe A. (Williams) Smith. He was born at Flint, Ind., November 8, 1857. He received his early education at Orland, Ind., and attended the University of Nebraska from 1880 to 1884. He was married February 8, 1885 to Miss Anna S. Ashton of Geneva.A daughter was born to this union. She passed away at the age of nine months. In 1901 Mr. and Mrs. Smith took into their home Verl Wilson, then a lad of thirteen years, for whom they cared until he reached maturity. Mrs. Smith died in Hollywood, Cal., March 23, 1937. When Mr. Smith came to Nebraska in 1873, he was first employed as clerk in the Platt & Smith store in Geneva. He taught school in 1883. From 1885 to 1893 he was engaged in farming. He also operated a butcher shop in Geneva from 1890 to 1893. During 1893 he conducted a hardware business in Geneva, which he traded the following year for 320 acres of land. From 1894 to 1909 he sold feed, fruit, seeds, vegetables and notions. From 1909 to 1921 he cared for his aged father, who was an invalid. Mr. Smith's hobby was buying and selling used furniture and he was engaged for many years in this enterprise. For about ten years preceding the death of Mrs. Smith, it had been the custom of Mr. and Mrs. Smith to spend the winter months at their home in California, and since Mrs. Smith's death, Mr. Smith had spent most of the winters there. He had traveled over most of the United States. Mr. Smith was a member of the congregational church. He was widely known and highly respected by his associates. His business career in Geneva has probably covered a period of more years than that of any other Geneva business man. Mr. Smith is survived by his foster son, Verl Wilson, and two nieces and a nephew. The funeral service was held at 2 p. m. Sunday, February 13, at the Kritner chapel in Geneva and was conducted by Rev. Isaac Cassel of the Geneva Congregational church. Many friends were in attendance to pay tribute to the departed. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery by the side of his wife. The Nebraska Signal Feb. 17, 1944 front page.
