The death of Cyrus Hover, which occurred at Spencerville Sunday morning, and was mentioned in the TIMES-DEMOCRAT yesterday, terminated the life of one of the oldest and most progressive pioneers of Allen county. Cyrus Hover was born in Trumbull county, O., on March 5th, 1823, and in 1833, then eleven years of age he came to this county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Hover, and the other members of the family, and located in this city. In 1846 he entered upon his career in life by starting the first foundry that was ever operated in Lima. On August 4, 1847, he married Miss Martha Post, who was born in Knox county, Ohio, Aug. 7, 1827, and their first residence was located at Main and Spring streets. In 1850 Mr. Hover removed his business to Delphos, where he remained thirteen years and then purchased a farm in Amanda township near Tones' mill. He removed his family onto the farm, which was then in a wild and uncultivated state, but before he left it was second to none in the township. In 1887 Mr. Hover's health became considerably imparied and he removed to Spencerville and practically retired from active life and remained at Spencerville until his death occurred Sunday, after a lingering illness. The deceased was comparatively successful in his enterprises. He was possessed of sound judgement, honorable and upright in all business transactions, and was one of the most substantial and influential farmers in the county. His union with Martha Post was blessed with eleven children. Six daughters and two sons, together with Mrs. Hover are still living. The daughters are Elizabeth C., wife of Rev. Philip Lemasters, of Spencerville; Mary E., wife of R. H. Gamble, of this city; Kate P., wife of D. H. Crites, of Amanda township; Mrs. James Cochran, of Spencerville; Mrs. M. Hitchcock, of Ft. Wayne and Miss Florence Hover, of Spencerville. The sons are Charles Hover, of this city, and Bryant G. Hover, agent for the C. & E. R. R., at Hammond, Ind. The deceased had one sister, Eliza, and five brothers, Joseph O., Adgate, W. U., Joshua, and James. The sister and Messrs Joseph and Adgate died quite a number of years ago but Cyrus, Joshua, and W. U., each lived to an advanced age and James is still living, a prominent resident of Shawnee township, and now the only survivor of his father's family. Cyrus was a prominent and an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years and his funeral services will be held from the church of that denomination at Spencerville at 9 o'clock (sun time) tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. Rev. N. S. Brackney, and old friend of the family, will conduct the services and the remains will be brought here and interred in Woodlawn cemetery.
