The funeral services for the late Mrs. Martha Hover were held at 1:00 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Cochran, Spencerville. The services were in charge of the Rev. M. C. Howey, pastor of the M. E. church there, assisted by the Rev. H. S. Worthington and the Rev. N. S. Brackney, Toledo, the latter preaching the funeral sermon. The signing was by a quartet. The funeral cortege reached Woodlawn cemetery, Lima, late in the afternoon, where a short service was held in the chapel for the friends who had gathered and the remains were laid to rest in beautiful Woodlawn. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. Martha Post Hover was born Aug. 7, 1827 in Knox county, Ohio and died in Spencerville, Ohio, September 8, 1912, aged 85 years, 1 month and 1 day. She lived in the home of her childhood till she was bout nine years old. Her father moved to Shelby, O., in Richland county, where remained until 1838. In 1838 her father was sent to Upper Sandusky, O., by the government to build a sawmill and rebuild the Indiana grist mill on the Sandusky river. This mill was for the use of the Indians on the reservation. While her father was repairing the mill, Martha taught the first school in that community, composed of six Indians and eight white children. She taught this school before she was fourteen years of age. While there she saw the last Indiana execution, that of young Indian, 22 years old, the son of a chief, for murder. That was in October, 1842. In 1842 she came with her parents to Amanda township in Allen county. She attended school in Shelby taught by Wm. H. Harris afterward bishop of the Methodist church. She attended school in Lima when it was but a village and taught several terms in Amanda township. A few of her pupils are still living, among them her two brothers, I. B. and Charles Post. She was married to Cyrus Hover by the Rev. Edward Williams, August 4, 1847 at her father's home. They went to housekeeping in a house on the corner of Main and Spring streets in Lima. In 1850 they moved to Delphos, O., and lived there until 1863, when they moved to a farm five miles east of Spencerville. In 1887 them moved to town and lived until Mr. Hover's death in 1896. Mrs. Hover was a remarkable woman in mind and personal charm. She was a fine conversationalist. Her mind was filled with pioneer experiences and she retained these incidents to the end. She married into one of the oldest and best families in Allen county and had for her ancestors the Bryant family. Her grandfather on her mother's side was first cousin to Wm. Cullen Bryan, the post. Her religious life commenced when she was about ten years old. She joined the first society of Methodists formed in Hartford when she was fifteen years old. Her public life was modest but her home life was very wholesome and pronounced. During her long life she had left a good and illustrious record. She has left her posterity a rich heritage and has been a great blessing in example to her asscoiates. It is said of her, had she had the privilege of a college education, she would have stamped the printed page with the same smiling and cheerful glow she did her home life. In April of this year she brought her church membership to the Trinity Methodist church in Spencerville. Three weeks ago when she realized she was very sick, while visiting her daughter in Hammond, Ind., she remarked, "I want you take me back home to Spencerville to die." She was the mother of eleven children three boys and eight girls. Of these Charles A., of Bryan; Mrs. Elizabeth Lemasters, wife of the Rev. L. Lemasters of Spencerville; Mrs. Mary E. Gamble, Lima; Mrs. Kate Crites, Lima; Mrs. Minnie Cochrun, Spencerville; Mrs. Florence E. Newell, Hammond, Ind.; Mrs. Hitchcock, Hammond, Ind., are living. Three children died in childhood. She leaves her children, their families and her brothers, I. B. and Post, Spencerville; and Charles Post, Parme, Mo., and a large circle of friends to pay her life a tribute.
