Manternach, 92, died of natural causes peacefully on Friday December 28, 2018 at Luther Manor in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with his wife Alice by his side. He was born in Scobey, Montana on February 3, 1926 to Frank and Esther Manternach. He joined an older brother Stanley and welcomed a younger brother Gordon a year later. They grew up on the farm South of Scobey and attended early years of school at the Manternach country school a short 2 miles away. Dale found studies to be easy and skipped 2nd grade, moving to Scobey school in town to graduate in 1943 as valedictorian of his class. Dale was also active in the Boy Scout program, achieving Eagle Scout in 1940. He attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis for one year. There he learned his gifting's of composition and expression which would serve him well later. He enlisted in the army in 1944 taking basic training at Camp Roberts, California. Upon completion of basic training he was shipped to France and joined a unit to pursue and reinforce General Patton. They finally caught up to him in Plzen, Czechoslovakia. The war ended the following morning. In 1946, Dale began working the family farm and soon found himself in the dairy business. He began pursuing a young Canadian girl named Lois Anderson, who was working in Stella Bernard’s hair salon. Dale and Lois were married October 16, 1949. To this union were born seven children, Donavan Lee who only lived 2 hours, Ingrid, Dallas, Clair, Lee, Duane and Mary. During the next three decades their farm was host to many activities including sledding on hills with Sunday school students, 4-H projects, ice skating parties on the river, card parties and many other social gatherings. Dale taught high school Sunday school at Scobey Lutheran for 25 years and served on the church board for a number of years. He was also an active member of Gideons throughout his adult life. In 1975, as a member of Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship International, he began facilitating Gospel Good News, a daily Christian broadcast on KCGM radio. This evolved into Dale composing and presenting a daily 15 minute broadcast for 37 years. Lois passed away in 1995. Dale continued farming until 1999, and after 52 years of farming, he retired and married Alice Hedin and moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. One of his biggest joys was Master of Ceremonies at a new years eve party every year at the Ramkota Inn. He also enjoyed being involved with various ministries, including being an active member of The Abiding Savior Lutheran Church where he became involved in writing daily devotionals. He modified 365 of these into a daily devotional book called "Moments with the Master" intended as a legacy to leave to his family, which he then ended up publishing in 2011. Dale will be remembered as a Christian layman who was very handy with the Word of God. Dale is survived by his wife Alice, children, Ingrid Larson, Dallas (Karen) Manternach, Clair Manternach and Mary (Brian) Beckers, daughter-in-law Jeanette Manternach, sister-in-law Bev Clayburgh, stepchildren, Paul (Sheree) Hedin, Joyce (Tim) Schmidt, John Hedin and Mary Ann (Steve) Sherman, 27 grandchildren, 28 great grand children and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Stanley and Gordon, wife Lois, sons Donavon Lee, Lee and Duane, son-in-law Greg Larson and step daughter-in-law Beth Hedin. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, memorials can be sent to Gideons International, KCGM Radio, or Rhone’s Farm and Retreat, LLC (for the support of veterans).
