Dallas Haymond Culmer was the ninth of ten children born to John Culmer and Sarah Maria Carr. Dallas was born on June 20, 1882 in Northville, Illinois. His father, John Culmer was 58 years old when Dallas was born. Dallas had been named after his mother's cousin, Dallas Haymond who died as a child. His father, John had emigrated from Milton next to Gravesend in Kent England in 1845. John had gone to the Gold Rush in California in 1849 and later built a brick grocery in Northville and was appointed the post master there by Abraham Lincoln. John and Sarah Culmer had ten children, William, Kate, Mary Ann, Lawrence, Charles, Abbie, R.D., Dallas, and Goldieth. The impressive brick building still stands in Northville, Illinois. Dallas lived with his parents working in the family grocery store in Northville, Illinois. His father died in 1901. At that time, Dallas moved to Woolstock, Iowa. His brother Charles was working on farms there and had married Julia Beshey. Dallas met Ella Dora Beshey who was the sister of Julia. Ella and Dallas were married on February 27, 1903. The family would have four girls and two boys; Velma (1903), Florence (1906), Hattie (1908), Lowell (1911), Marion (1915), and Clyde (1921). Dallas who was known as Dell operated several grocery stores in Dows, Clarion, and Iowa Falls until 1918. At that time Ella's father, Frank Beshey who was a very successful farmer gave them a farm near Woolstock. Frank had been born in France but after moving to Woolstock was able to accumulate 11 farms so that all his children received a farm and a house in Woolstock. Like many people in the depression, the Culmer family lost the farm on March 30, 1933. Dallas and Ella separated in 1933. Dallas moved to Des Moines to work. He worked building homes for a time. Then, he worked as a custodian at the Wheeler Apartments on 1712 Crocker Street for many years. Dallas had 12 grandchildren. He was taken home by his sons and buried at the Woolstock Cemetery. The date on his stone says he was born in 1881 but his World War I Draft registration and other documents indicate that he was born in 1882.
