Description	:	Harriet Ada Culmer Van Dyke was the third of six children born to Dallas and Ella Beshey Culmer. Hattie was born June 9, 1908 in Clarion, Iowa. She had three sisters, Velma, Florence, and Marion and two brothers, Lowell and Clyde. The family lived in Dows, Clarion and Iowa Falls where Dallas would work in grocery stores. In 1918, Ella's father, Frank L. Beshey gave the family a farm near Woolstock, Iowa. Hattie lived with her family near Woolstock attending school in that community. The family lived in Dows, Clarion and Iowa Falls where Dallas would work in grocery stores. In 1918, Ella's father, Frank L. Beshey gave the family a farm near Woolstock, Iowa. Hattie lived with her family near Woolstock attending school in that community. In 1928, Hattie moved to Des Moines, Iowa where several of her sisters lived. Hattie attended Drake University studying Art. On April 12, 1932, Hattie married Guy Quintin Van Dyke in Des Moines, Iowa. Guy was born February 23, 1907 to John Wesley Van Dyke and Kate Roberts in Missouri. Guy worked as a chauffeur for the Brown Cab Company, in a lab, and as a tree trimmer. Guy went in the Navy in 1942. Hattie and Guy had six children, John Dallas (1933) Dora Kate Hanson (1935), Ronald Shirley (1937-1991), Fred Duane. (1938 -2005), Joan J. Bushway (1940-2005), and Barbara Jean Pollock Hay (1942-2002). (Barbara was adopted by Cecil and Marie Pollock from Waterloo.) After Guy returned from World War II, the family moved to Woolstock, Iowa where her mother Ella Culmer and brother Clyde Culmer still lived. Guy worked construction and Hattie was a housewife. Guy and Hattie divorced around 1949 when Guy and his oldest son, John, moved to California. In later years, Hattie lived in Webster City. Hattie passed away in July 1986 in a nursing home in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Hattie was cremated and her ashes were buried near her father Dallas Haymond Culmer in the Woolstock Cemetery.
