On February 14,1885 Ella Dora Beshey was the 5th child of eleven children born to Frank L. Beshey and Jane Claude in Woolstock, Iowa. Her birth name was Eldora. The records of her childhood all show her name as Eldora. When Ella married Dallas Haymond Culmer from Northville, Illinois on February 27. 1903, she lists her name as Ella Dora. Our family never had the problem corrected. On February 14,1885 Ella Dora Beshey was the 5th child of eleven children born to Frank L. Beshey and Jane Claude in Woolstock, Iowa. Her birth name was Eldora. The records of her childhood all show her name as Eldora. When Ella married Dallas Haymond Culmer from Northville, Illinois on February 27. 1903, she lists her name as Ella Dora. The family would have four girls and two boys. Dallas who was known as Dell operated several grocery stores in Dows, Clarion, and Iowa Falls until 1918. At that time, Frank Beshey who was a very succesful farmer gave them a farm near Woolstock. Frank had been born in France but after moving to Woolstock was able to accumulate 11 farms so that all his children recieved a farm and a house in Woolstock. Like many people in the depression, the Culmer family lost the farm on March 30, 1933. Dallas moved to Des Moines to work and Ella stayed in Woolstock. Ella became a switchboard operator for the Woolstock Mutual Telephone Company. She lived in rooms behind the office since the switchboard buzzed 24 hours a day. Ella was the manager and operator for 22 years until 1955 when they automated the system. In her later years, Ella became a companion and would live with older people needing extra help. Her children: Velma Irene (Earle) Fadden (1903-1987) Florence Genevieve (Wesley) Cleveland (1906-1961) Harriet Ada (Guy) Vandyke (1908-1986) Lowell Dallas Culmer (1911-1998) Marion Culmer (Earle B.) Foley (1915-?) Clyde Dell Culmer (1921-2002) One sadness is that her daughter, Marion, disappeared back in the 1960's and the family never heard from her again.
