Description	:	D.H. Winney may have been born in Up State NY or in route to Michigan. His parents were John Winney and Elizabeth Marie Crounse from Cherry Valley NY. Daniel's family are direct descendants of Dutchman, Peter Winnie that arrived in Albany NY about 1640 and was a landowner and fur trader in the Mohawk Valley. His family along with his Grandparents Frederick Phillip Crounse and Maria Donny left Schoharie and Cherry Valley New York for land in Lower Michigan about 1835. Daniel Henry was the youngest of nine children. His family along with his Grandparents Frederick Phillip Crounse and Maria Donny left Schoharie and Cherry Valley New York for land in Lower Michigan about 1835. His Grandfather purchased several large tracts of land in Saint Joseph County near White Pigeon. At that time, it was still Michigan Territory and part of the Michigan/Ohio Strip. March 1, 1836, Grandfather Frederick Crounse sold a portion of his land to his son-in-law John Winney, Daniel's father. John's family was able to work and develop the land for a couple of years until an outbreak of malaria caused the deaths of Daniel's parents. The family was torn apart at that time and the elder sisters Maria Cornelia Newhall and Nancy Winney Moak raised their younger siblings. Daniel was raised by his sister Nancy and her husband first Baltzer Moak in LaGrange County Indiana then in Viola, Mercer County Illinois. In 1855 we find Daniel across the Mississippi in Scott County Iowa working for the Hayward family from Bridport Vermont. On February 04, 1857, in Pleasant Valley near Davenport, Daniel married Charlotte Elvira Hayward. They had a son Charles Wellington Winney and a daughter Carrie Belle Winney. About 1866 They were living in Brooklyn, Powashiek County and Manning Carroll County Iowa in 1884. That year Charles and Carrie were both married on the same day in a double wedding. By 1885 all three families are establishing new homesteads in Northern Nebraska. Charlotte died August 12, 1886, in Keya Paha County, NE followed four years later by the loss of his grandson, William Earl Winney. Two years of drought conditions forced many folks in Nebraska to leave the area. Possible Daniel may have gone to Oklahoma for a few years with his daughter Carrie and Son-In-Law John Swearingen. In 1910 Daniel is living in Swan Lake Township, Pocahontas County, Iowa where his occupation is listed as a farmer. Obituary of Mr. Daniel Henry Winney, Laurens or Storm Lake, IA. Obit pasted to inside cover of Bible records. (Transcript by Alan Williams) DANIEL H. WINNEY Daniel Henry Winney was born in New York May 8, 1835 and died Friday June 17, 1910. He lived in New York until manhood when he moved to Davenport, Iowa and was married to Charlotte Elmivia Hayward February 4, 1857. To this union two children were born Chas. Wellington Winney of California and Carrie Belle Swearingen of Laurens, Iowa. His home has been with his children since the death of his wife 24 years ago until 7 months ago he came to make his home with his granddaughter, Mrs. Jack Williams of Laurens, Iowa at which place he died. He leaves two children, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren to mourn his death. The funeral service was held at the home of Mr. Jack Williams four and a half miles northwest of Laurens, Sunday afternoon, conducted by E. J. Nickerson pastor of the Christian Church. Internment was made in the Laurens cemetery.
