Daniel O’Brien was born in 1900 in Ayrshire. He was educated in Ayrshire and Sioux City schools before graduating from a barber school in Des Moines. He then worked as a barber in Emmetsburg. In 1934 he married Eleanor Shimon at Pocahontas. The couple settled in Pocahontas where he owned and operated the O’Brien Barber Shop for nearly 40 years.
