March 18, 1901 - Carroll Sentinel - — Dan Shollenberger has recovered from the smallpox and is out on the streets again. Sept 17, 1902 - Carroll Sentinel - A horrible accident occurred in the yards of the Northwestern in Carroll yesterday forenoon in which Dan Shollenberger lost his life. Dan has for a number of years been one of the switch crew engaged in the yards and was in the regular discharge of his duties when the accident occurred. Just south of the Joyce lumber yards the engineer was making a "fly switch" of a loaded car with cinders. Dan had uncoupled the car from the engine and was standing with one foot on the beam above the coupling, holding with one hand to the bar that worked the pin. His foot slipped and he was thrown under the car which passed over one leg and his head being struck by a wheel and crushed in at the crown. At the coroner's inquest Ed. F. Richmann, John Haubrich and H.C. Stevens served as jurors. Nothing more definite was brought out. It was evident that Dan was standing with one foot on the beam, with his hand hold of the rod. He slipped and was unable to climb back on the car. Finally his hold gave way and he was borne to his death beneath the wheels. He was dragged from 30 to 60 feet before his body was left on the track. The news of his death was a severe shock to the community. Deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Shollenberger of Carroll, and was born in Berks county, Pa., November 30, 1867 and therefore lacked a few weeks of being 36 years old. He came west with his parents while yet a child, resided in Washington township till he came to Carroll about a dozen years ago. In July, three years ago he was married to Miss Addie Supplee of this city and to them was born a son, John Wayne. He was an industrious, honorable, genial young man and everybody who knew him was his friend. His death has shocked the community and sympathy with the wife and family of the deceased is universal. The funeral was held at the Methodist church this afternoon at 3 o'clock and was largely attended. Rev. W.B. Thompson conducted the exercises and delivered an impressive sermon.
