They were the parents of Catherine. On April 29, 1918, Mr. Shollenberger was married at Carroll to Mrs Cora Baker of Wenatchee, WA. Cora died in 1947. April 6, 1938 - Carroll Daily - J.A. Shollenberger, well-known Carroll resident, died at his home, 827 North Main Street, at 5:30 Tuesday evening after a long illness of heart disease and complications. Death came quietly as he slept. The latter part of September 1937, Mr Shollenberger was first taken ill. He had gradually failed since that time and he had been bedfast for the past three months. He had grown much weaker during the last four days before his death. The body will be taken at 5 o'clock Wednesday evening from the Huffman Funeral Home to the family home, where it will rest until the funeral services. Burial will be in the family lot in the Carroll cemetery and pall bearers will be former railway associates of Mr Shollenberger. John Allen Shollenberg was (one paragraph is missing. It was impossible to read) and attended rural schools. When he was about twenty years old, Mr. Shollenberger went to Omaha, where he was employed as a painter for some time. Returning to Carroll, he entered the employ of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company, in whose service he continued for thirty - two years. During most of that time he was switch engine foreman here. Following his retirement from railway service eight years ago, he resumed his former occupation of painting and decorating, in which he was engaged at the time he became ill last September 30. Mr Shollenberger was married in Carroll in June 1893 to Miss Laura Taylor who was a teacher in the high school here. To them was born one daughter, Catherine, now Mrs Kenneth K Holley of Carroll. Mrs Shollenberger passed away June 1, 1915. On April 29, 1918, Mr. Shollenberger was married at Carroll to Mrs Cora Baker of Wenatchee, WA, who with the daughter, Mrs Holley survives. Mr. Shollenberger also leaves one sister, Mrs Mary S Gillilan of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Robert P Shollenberger, of Albany, NY; and three grandchildren: Marguerite, Rosemary and Allen Holley of Carroll. He was one of a family of seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Dan Shollenberger of Carroll, Ben Shollenberger of Marshalltown and George Shollenberger, of Chicago and one sister, Ida Shollenberger, who died in early childhood. Mr. Shollenberger was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, with which he united many years ago. For a long time he was a member of the church choir. He was prominent in Masonic circles and was a member of all of the Masonic bodies of Carroll including Signet Lodge No. 264 A.F. & A.M., Azgad Commandery No. 63, Knights Templar, Copestone Chapter No. 78, and Cryptic Council. He was active in every branch of Masonry and he held offices in all of the Masonic bodies at the time of his death. Mr. Shollenberger also belonged to Signet Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star. April 9, 1938 - Carroll Daily - Funeral services for J.A. Shollenberger, who died Tuesday eveninig, were conducted at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church and were largely attended. The Rev. William K. Yingling officiated. The Masonic service was given at the curch and the oration was delivered by J.H. Post. The musical part of the services consisted ot two solos, "Asleep in Jesus" and "Abide With Me" sung by Mrs. W.J. Forrest with organ accompaniment by Mrs. Carson Summers. The Masons attended the services in a body and members of Azgad Conmmandery No. C3, Knights Templar, formed an escort from the church to the cemetery. Burial was in the family lot and pallbearers, all of whom were former railway associates of Mr. Shollenberger, were O.J. Peterson, B.W. Flsk, H.E. Schoolcraft, E.J. Broderick, W.S. Bayley and Frank Daley. Out-of-town relatives and friends at the rites included Mrs. Ben Shollenberger of Marshalltown, sister-in-law of the deceased, and Link Rule and Murray McCracken of Boone.
