Read More	Link to father sent by Dan LeGrand (48055820) *********************** Cherokee Sentinel, Sept. 1, 1916, page 1: Obituary Daniel Porter was born in Trayton, Cortland County, New York on the 19th day of March A.D. 1842 and was mustered out at his home in Cherokee, Kansas, on the 25th day of August A.D. 1916, aged 74 years 5 months and 6 days. Early in life he with his father's family emigrated from New York and settled in Iowa where they lived until after the Civil War. Young Daniel came to Kansas where he continued to live in and around Cherokee until the final summons came. While he was yet a young man living at his home in Iowa he heard his country's call to arms and at the age of 19 years he enlisted on August 25th, the anniversary of his death, in the 20th Regiment of Iowa volunteer Infantry and was honorably discharged on July 26th, 1865, thus giving three years of his young life to the service of his beloved land and country as a vigilant soldier in defense of the union. Returning from the army, in a few years he with others came to Kansas where he continued to live in and around Cherokee until the "final roll was called," he was present, and is now bivouacked with the dead on "flames eternal camping grounds," in that eternity to which we are all hastening. May he rest in peace. He was married on the 17th day of February 1889 to Miss Laura Hedrick. To this union two daughters were born, Gladys A. Doty and Aletha L. McCants. He leaves his wife, Laura J. Porter, two daughters, two brothers, John and Harlow, who live in a distant state, and numerous other relatives to mourn the loss of husband, father and brother. He was an honest, upright and conscientious citizen, loved and respected by all and numbering his friends by his acquaintances. Daniel Porter was not a member of any church organization but was a believer in the religion of Jesus Christ who died for all. Just before he left he expressed his faith, peace and confidence in the saving power of the Master and expressed himself as ready to go and be at rest. We cannot call our beloved back but by the Grace of God through obedience we can go to him on the other side. Funeral services were held at the Christian church by G.W. Brown on Sunday afternoon and interment followed in the Cherokee cemetery. Contributed by Cheryl White
