McCants, 96, lifetime resident of rural Cherokee, died at 5:49 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 1989, at the Medicalodge South. She had been a resident of Medicalodge since Dec. 12, 1988. She was born Oct. 19, 1892, on a farm home near Cherokee where she spent most of her life, to Daniel and Laura Hendricks Porter. She married William "Bill" McCants on March 10, 1915. She was born Oct. 19, 1892, on a farm home near Cherokee where she spent most of her life, to Daniel and Laura Hendricks Porter. She married William "Bill" McCants on March 10, 1915. They moved to the farm on which she was born and spent their entire married life at that home. Mr. McCants died Nov. 3, 1978. Mrs. McCants was a member of the Cherokee United Methodist Church and a member of the Cherokee Chapter No. 130 Order of Eastern Star for more than 50 years. Survivors include one daughter, Aletha Faye Otto of Kincaid, Kan.; two grandsons, four great-granddaughters and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Helen McCants and Opal McCants; one son, Porter McCants; one sister, Gladys Doty; and one great-grandson, Carl Otto. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Brenner Chapel, with the Rev. Vinita Jones of the Beulah Community Church officiating. Burial will be in the Cherokee Cemetery. The family will receive friends (from) 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Brenner Chapel.
