DARCUS MARIAH GRAY BIO 28 SEPTEMBER 1859 – 28 September 1875 Darcus lived with her parents, Bill and Thruza Wineinger Gray, a sister, and 4 younger brothers, on their farm across the road from the Mount Zion Church and School in Owen Township, Jackson County, Indiana. Not quite 16, she and her 3-year younger sister walked from their home on a September afternoon to see the flooding White River to the east. Depending upon the severity of the flood, that would have been a straight-line walk of two to three miles. They frolicked in the mud and floodwaters for some time before returning home. A couple of days later Darcus became acutely ill, apparently from the common but poorly understood “Swamp Fever”. Family members believed she became infected during the sisters’ walk to the river. Her sister, Adaline Henrietta was unaffected, and lived to a ripe old age, repeating this story to each generation. Darcus was laid to rest in the nearest active cemetery of the day, Old Heighten Hill. Being relative new comers to Jackson County, the Grays had not yet established a cemetery tradition, although one Gray, perhaps a distant cousin to Bill, was already buried at Heighten Hill. Earlier departing members of her mother’s family were buried in the western part of the county. Later burials of Darcus’s family members were done at Mt. Zion and Smallwood Cemeteries."
