Description	:	HOLDREGE — Darryl Wayne Erickson, 86, of Holdrege died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege with the Rev. Buck Linton-Hendrick officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege. He was born April 23, 1919, near Holdrege to J. Emil and Jennie B. (Applegate) Erickson. On Jan. 24, 1942, he married A. Lucille Teaford at Camp San Luis in Obispo, Calif. Survivors include his wife; son, Steven of Madison, Ohio; daughter, Jean Beckman of Harrisonville, Mo.; and 12 great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include his son-in-law Bruce Beckman of Harrisonville; daughter-in-law Jane Erickson of Madison; grandchildren, Eric Jochens, James Curran IV, James Erickson and his wife Christine, John Erickson and his wife Joanna, Andrew Erickson and his wife Jennifer, Meguma Erickson, Yumi Erickson and J.B. Wilson and his wife Dena; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was the third of four children. He attended country school and later graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1936. He attended Loomis High School during his junior year. Following his education, he was employed at the Phelps County Creamery and Produce Co. until his enlistment in the National Guard on Nov. 15, 1940. He spent the first year of his service training at Camp Robinson in Little Rock, Ark. Upon declaration of war, the 35th Division was sent to Fort Ord, Calif., and later on to Camp San Luis in Obispo. He was stationed at Camp San Luis Obispo twice, Van Nuys and Pasadena, Calif., where he was transferred from the 110th Quartermaster to the 35th Division Headquarters. He was later stationed at Camp Rucker, Ala.; Murfreesboro, Tenn., for maneuvers, and then went to Camp Butner, N.C. On May 12, 1944, the 35th Division was sent to serve in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and the Ardennes in Central Europe. He received the Bronze Star Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Ribbon for his service. He earned the rank of master sergeant while serving in the armed forces. He returned to the United States in September 1945 and received his honorable discharge Oct. 7, 1945. He returned to Holdrege, worked for the Coca Cola Bottling Co. for 15 years, and later worked for the United States Postal Service as a city carrier until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Holdrege for more than 50 years. He served in many offices of the church and was a member of the choir for more than 25 years. He was a member of the Jachin Lodge 147 A.F.&A.M., the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, the Tehama Temple in Hastings, and was a deputy grand custodian emeritus and member of the Concordia Chapter 97 of the Order of the Eastern Star. He also was a member of the American Legion, Tre Kronor, Phelps County Historical Society, the National Association of Letter Carriers and was a charter member of the BPO Elks Club. He took an active part in Boy Scouts Troop 216 during the time his son was involved. He and his wife enjoyed collecting antiques. His special collection was antique carpentry tools, which included many wooden planes. He also collected paperweights and little individual salt dishes. He had many outside interests, loved to help anyone and was sort of the handyman of the neighborhood. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold Erickson and his wife Helen, and Robert and his wife Ophelia; sister, Helen Spengler and her husband John; brother-in-law, Lloyd W. Teaford and his wife Betty; sister-in-law, Lois Kaup and her husband Burnell; and granddaughter, Lisa Kudlacz. A memorial has been established. ©Kearney Hub 2006
