She was raised in Columbia and graduated from Knoxville High School. Lanell was united in marriage to James Rowland on August 20, 1939 at the Methodist Church parsonage in Bussey. Read More	**IN LOVING MEMORY OF** Laura Lanell Rowland was born on April 15, 1920 at her parents' home in rural Columbia, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Mina (Spaur) Smith. She was raised in Columbia and graduated from Knoxville High School. Lanell was united in marriage to James Rowland on August 20, 1939 at the Methodist Church parsonage in Bussey. The couple made their home near Columbia where they farmed and raised their children. Lanell began working at Collins Hospital/Knoxville Hospital in 1975 as a cook, retiring from the job 1985. After her husband passed away in 1979, Lanell remained on the farm for a few years, before moving to Knoxville in 1982. She was proud to have been a resident of Marion County her entire life. While living in Columbia, Lanell was a charter member of the Columbia Baptist Church. After moving to Knoxville, she became active in Faith Baptist Church. She enjoyed teaching Bible school and Sunday school and playing the piano at church. Music was an important part of her life. She taught her children to play the piano and sing, and she regularly sang at the area nursing homes. She also enjoyed taking care of her children and sewing their clothes and interacting with her neighbors. She enjoyed the thoughtfulness of her close friends. Lanell passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2011 at the Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; and grandson, Ryan Showers. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, James Ardean (Fontalee) Rowland of Norwalk, Ardith (Harold) Showers of Lovilia, Charlotte (Phil) Kaufman of Whittier, CA, and Arlen (Dawn) Rowland of Montezuma; grandchildren, Laura and Andrew Rowland, Rodney, Randy and Roger Showers, Brenda Porras, Deanna McFerson, Debbie Leonard and Heidi Rowland; 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 30 at 10 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church in Knoxville. Burial will follow in Gosport Cemetery in rural Columbia. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to HCI Care Services or to Faith Baptist Church.
