Darwin was born on May 11, 1951, in Central City to Robert and Wilma (Butts) Ruge. Survivors are: wife, Janice; son, John Ruge of Sallisaw, Okla.; daughter, Kimberly Ruge; stepsons, Dustin and Shannon Maxwell, still at home; sister and brother-in-law, Rowena and Ronnie Miller of Grand Island; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dwain Ruge of Hastings and Dana and Carla Ruge of Lewisville, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Sherry Ruge of Boelus and a host of relatives and friends. Darwin was born and raised in Central City. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Darwin attended Central City Public Schools. In high school, he was one of the first wrestlers to compete when the program was first initiated. He went on to wrestle at state his junior and senior years. Darwin graduated in 1970 and entered the U.S. Marine Corps. He first served at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and then was transferred to Yuma, Ariz., to work with a search and rescue helicopter unit. After serving his country for more than eight years, he was honorably discharged. After the military, he moved to Tulsa and attended and graduated from Spartan Aviation School. He was employed for numerous years at Beaties Hitch Center as a welder. On May 28, 1989, he married Sharon Rauert in Central City at the Lone Tree Monument. That union brought two children and a stepdaughter, Nicole Rauert. They were divorced in 1998. In 1990, he was hired by American Airlines. He worked his "dream job" as an aircraft mechanic until his death. He also co-owned and operated a business, Tony's Trailers of Catoosa, Okla., with his best friend of more than 20 years, Tony Cook. On Sept. 13, 2003, he married Janice Avant at a scenic spot in Eureka Springs, Ark. Darwin was a member of the Sequayah Hills Baptist Church. He enjoyed Bible study, hunting, fishing, attending auctions, taking care of his huge garden, building, remodeling, traveling with family, and picking fresh peaches when the crops were ready. His children were his pride and joy. Horseback riding, going to the Big Splash Water Park and attending church social functions were a few of their favorite activities. Darwin was last home to Central City last July 4th weekend to attend his 40th high school class reunion. He loved the time spent reminiscing with friends and former classmates. Darwin was a kind, gentle and generous man who touched the lives of everyone he met. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered. Darwin was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; his oldest brother, Darell Ruge; and an infant nephew, Michael Todd Ruge. At Darwin's service, a heartfelt eulogy was given by his longtime friend Tony Cook. Honorary pallbearers were Tony Cook, Steve Dobias, Charlie Erien, C.V. Hill, John Springer and Tommy Wagner.
