Christopher and Elmyra Hootman buried in Winchester cemetery, Van Buren county, Iowa), was born in Van Buren county, Iowa, March 14, 1845, and died at his home in Birmingham, Iowa, the morning of January 28th, 1917, aged 71 years, 10 months and 17 days. His entire life with the exception of a few years spent in California and other places visiting relatives, was spent in Van Buren county and there is no man better known nor more respected in the community that has always been his home than David Hootman. He was married December 4, 1969 to Lorenia Robison, and went to housekeeping and lived continuously for over 34 years on what is known as the David Hootman farm, four miles south of Birmingham. In November, 1903 they moved to Birmingham, the following year purchasing and moving to the property which has since been their home. David was a lover of music, from his boyhood days had been an excellent fifer, and for years has been a member of what is called the Robert Johnson martial band, and their services were in demand far and near, always readily responding when the call was for Memorial Day or other patriotic services. We will all miss with much regret the soft notes of the fife playing the dirge on Memorial Day, a day that was sacred to him and Uncle Bobby Johnson, both now being in spirit land. He was converted and joined the Presbyterian church at Mt. Zion, Iowa, in 1870, and while his home had been in Birmingham for a number of years, he still retained his membership to the old home church, although loyal and liberal to the local church, at which he was a regular attendant when health permitted. For the past six months he has been in failing health, and had expressed the doubt whether he would survive the winter. When he was taken down with pneumonia, nine days before his death, he did not expect to recover, and during his illness made arrangements for his funeral service, selecting the singers, the songs he preferred, pallbearers, minister, the service to be held in the new Presbyterian church, having been a member of the building committee during its erection, and of which he was so proud. He leaves to mourn his departure, his devoted wife; two sisters, Mrs. Hannah Robison of Birmingham, and Mrs. Mary C. Ranard of Washburn, N. Dak.; one half-brother, Oscar Hootman of Eldon, Iowa, besides a host of relatives and friends. The funeral service was held in the Presbyterian church, in charge of Re, Bock, assisted by Rev. D. W. Morgan of Niota, Ill., a former pastor, Rev. Mitchel of Mt. Zion Presbyterian church, and Rev. Baumgarten of the M. E. church of this place. As Mrs. Hootman on account of illness was unable to attend the service at the church, a short service was held at the home. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery east of town.
