Nelson Expires Monday Evening at 5:30. INQUEST HELD BY CORONER TUESDAY Coroner's Jury Brought in the Verdict at 4 O'clock. While leaning against the rail at the depot Monday at 5:30 p.m., David E. Nelson fell suddenly to the platform and expired. He was noticed leaning over the rail as if he was going to fall over it two or three times and then fell over backwards, his head striking the platform, heavily near the railing. Roy Norton, who was standing at the bank corner, went down and the fallen man breathed heavily two or three times and died. A doctor was called who pronounced him dead. The coroner was telephoned for and he came down Tuesday. In the meantime the form was placed in Stromert, Strand and Johnson's undertaking rooms. Upon Coroner Hall's arrival a jury consisting of J.T. Drug, foreman; P.A. Swanson and G.F. Hook was empanelled and heard the evidence as brought in by many witnesses, among them Ralph and Richard Oslund, Dr. McCall, Ben Knuth, Roy Norton, J.E. Milburn, Will Erickson, Bert Ballard and Mrs. Sam Stockdale. From the evidence of some of these it seems that David Nelson was one of a number of ten men who were drinking the contents of a four gallon keg of beer in a car on the side-tracks. Ralph Oslund and David Nelson passed a few hot words and Nelson kicked Oslund during the melee, then jumped from the car and ran toward the depot with Oslund following him. Knuth followed the latter and got him back to the car, but not before Oslund had struck Nelson and missed him, he alleges. At 4 o'clock and after seventeen witnesses had been examined, the coroner's jury brought in the following verdict: "Deceased came to his death by no unlawful means." The post mortem examination was held over the remains and the top of the head removed. It was found that the temporal artery had been ruptured but the hemorrhage was slight, the bursting of the blood vessel probably occurring but a few moments before his death. Deceased leaves a wife and two children, a mother and father and several brothers and sisters. Webster City Tribune July 22, 1904 FELL DEAD ON THE DEPOT PLATFORM David E. Nelson of Stratford Meets death In That Town in a Very Peculiar Manner. LEAVES WIFE AND CHILDREN Coroner O.A. Hall is Notified and Holds an Inquest Over the Remains of Nelson. Stratford, July 19 - Special to the Freeman-Tribune: David E. Nelson fell dead on the depot platform in this place last evening. Mr. Nelson was a farmer, residing near here. He was in poor circumstances and leaves a wife and two children. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson had been married but three years. It is supposed that apoplexy or an acute attack of heart disease was the cause of the sudden death. Dr. O.A. Hall of Webster City, county coroner, was notified last evening and came here on the 11:30 passenger this morning. The coroner's jury which he summoned will probably be in session until late this afternoon. Stratford Courier July 28, 1904 Obituary David Emanuel Nelson was born on March 25, 1875, in Hardin township, Webster county and died July 18, 1904 aged 29 years, 3 months and 23 days. He grew to manhood near this vicinity and on December 31, 1900 was united in marriage to Julia Ulrick. Two children were born to them. He has since lived on several farms near Stratford. He leaves a wife and two children, a father and mother, two brothers and two sisters to mourn his untimely death. The funeral was conducted by Rev. O.A. Arnquist from the Baptist church and the remains were laid to rest in the Oakwood cemetery.
