Description	:	David Heidema, 91, passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at home. David was born March 9, 1919, in Manhattan, the second child of Louis “LJ” and Anna Heidema. He moved to Billings with his family at age 11 and went through the eighth grade at Scandia School. He joined the Army in 1942 and was stationed in California, Arizona, Japan and the Philippines. David was born March 9, 1919, in Manhattan, the second child of Louis “LJ” and Anna Heidema. He moved to Billings with his family at age 11 and went through the eighth grade at Scandia School. He joined the Army in 1942 and was stationed in California, Arizona, Japan and the Philippines. He married Nellie Heidema, Dec. 28, 1949. David and Nellie built three homes together and had a beautiful garden. They sold garden vegetables to grocery stores and restaurants for many years. Last year, at age 90, David still had a garden and canned with the help of his daughter. He had family and friends over, and his chicken and rice and roast were among the menus requested. He worked with the Highway Department, Crane Company, and retired in 1979 as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service after 28 years of service. He received the first Special Achievement Award given to a Billings Postal employee. After retirement, he worked for Intermountain Distributing. David volunteered with Meals on Wheels, delivering lunches for many years to homebound people younger than himself. He also volunteered every year for the NALC food drive and asked for his “South side” delivery route, of which he had so many fond memories during his Postal career. David was active as a minister for the New Apostolic Church until age 65. His faith was very important to him, and he was a wonderful example to his family and all who he came in contact with. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his three brothers, John, Jake and George; and two sisters, Betty and Anna Lou. David is survived by three daughters, Nancy (Carl) Goeckeler of Kansas City, Mo., Sherry (Darin) Steiner and Debbie Heidema, both of Billings; four grandchildren, David (Liz) Goeckeler, Shylla Goeckeler, Erin Steiner and Trent Steiner; one great-granddaughter, Camryn Steiner. He is also survived by two sisters, Louise Heidema and Agnes Heidema, both of Billings; and numerous special nephews, nieces and friends. Dad — you were an inspiration to us in everything you did. We were blessed to have you for 91 years, and you taught us faith, love and humbleness. We love you, Dad. Services will be held at the New Apostolic Church, 500 15th St. West, Billings, on Tuesday, April 27, at 7 p.m. A visitation gathering will be at the Smith Downtown Chapel on Monday, April 26, from 7 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Mountview Cemetery on Wednesday, April 28, at 11 a.m. Memorials may be sent to RiverStone Health Hospice Services, Meals on Wheels or the New Apostolic Church Youth Fund for the David Heidema Memorial.
